Alan Pergament: Catching up on multiple media controversies

After taking last week off, I’m thinking of the song “What’d I Miss” from the Broadway production of “Hamilton.”

I didn’t miss a revolution, but I missed a lot of TV news and controversies.

I was off when two disputes over money that pulled channels off providers were settled.

First, Disney and Spectrum settled their dispute over how much the cable service would pay the content provider to carry its channels.

During the national standoff, cable subscribers missed key sporting events on the ESPNs, including college football and the U.S. Open tennis tournament.

Hulu+ live subscribers were able to watch the men’s and women’s finals on the streaming service, which is owned by Disney.

Some subscribers were able to get $10 to $15 rebates from Spectrum before it announced everyone would get a pro-rated rebate.

Not everyone is going to be happy about some elements of the deal.

As part of the deal, several Disney cable channels have remained off Spectrum, including Baby TV, Disney Junior, Disney XD, Freeform, FXM, FXX, Nat Geo Wild and Nat Geo Mundo. If other similar deals are made, that could further impact the long-term futures of those channels.

On the plus side, in the coming months, subscribers with Spectrum TV Select will eventually be able to get the paid streaming service Disney+ for free. That should enable those who pay for the streaming service to drop it after the changeover.

ESPN+ also will be given to Spectrum TV Select Plus subscribers, which also will enable those with that package who pay for the streaming service to drop it after the changeover.

You might not know if you have Spectrum TV Select or TV Select Plus. You should call Spectrum to find out.

The Nexstar dispute with DIRECTV also ended while I was off just in time for the Buffalo Bills’ 38-10 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in the home opener Sunday to be carried by WIVB-TV (Channel 4), the local CBS affiliate.
