Remnants of Tropical Storm Ophelia trigger coastal flooding advisory for Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The remnants of Tropical Storm Ophelia are expected to cause minor coastal flooding Monday afternoon into Monday evening, the National Weather Service said.

The storm is slated to make a slow exit from the East Coast towards the Atlantic Ocean after making landfall in North Carolina over the weekend and causing widespread heavy rainfall, gusty wind and storm surge.

A coastal flood advisory is in effect for Staten Island between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service, which warns that additional coastal flooding remains a possibility for Tuesday.

“Minor flooding is expected in the more vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline,” the National Weather Service said. “Some roads and low lying properties including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes and businesses with basements near the waterfront will experience minor flooding.”

Officials warned motorists to avoid traveling through flooded roads and to allow for extra travel time.
