CBS play-by-play announcer Andrew Catalon conceded in a preseason interview that he is aware of potential criticism from fans of Bills regular season opponents looking for favoritism because they know he works Bills preseason games.
But there was nothing he could do about the one-sidedness of his enthusiasm during the Billsโ 37-3 domination of the host Washington Commanders and quarterback Sam Howell.
Catalonโs enthusiasm level was first class during all the big plays, including Josh Allenโs missile to Gabe Davis for a touchdown and his scramble for another touchdown; A.J. Epenesaโs pick six; and every big play by Bills linebacker Terrel Bernard in a career game.
Washington fans shouldnโt criticize Catalon because their team provided almost nothing to be enthusiastic about.
Catalonโs game enthusiasm was matched in the post-game by CBS studio analysts Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason in looking forward to the Bills game Sunday against Miami, who put up 70 points in dominating Denver Sunday.
โJust after watching these highlights, I canโt wait to see Buffalo against the Miami Dolphins in Orchard Park,โ said Simms.
โIt should be a wild scene in Orchard Park,โ added Esiason.
The Bills-Miami game will be called by CBSโ top team, play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and analyst Tony Romo.
The Bills win over Washington was called by CBSโ newest team of Catalon and analysts Matt Ryan and Tiki Barber. Iโm not a big fan of three-man booths but Catalon made it work smoothly, allowing Ryan and Barber to have time to make their points.
Ryan, the former MVP quarterback, is a promising analyst who sprinkles technical aspects like disguising Cover 2 defenses and aspects of quarterback play with opinions.
Ryan wasnโt afraid to be wrong, as he was when he suggested it is better to go for a big play on the second play after a turnover rather than the first play.
