DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — The sculpture “Beacon, 2019” by Michael Alfano has been intriguing people walking by Brooklyn Borough Hall’s east courtyard since it was installed there in early August.
The bronze and aluminum artwork takes on a different aspect depending upon the angle of view.
On his website, Alfano describes the piece as “the profile of a child’s face, which resembles a candle flame shining their light into the world. The hard, bronze material is designed so as to form a wispy, light profile.”
Alfano said the work was inspired by a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. quote, which is on a plaque accompanying the sculpture:
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
“Beacon” was brought to the courtyard, part of Columbus Park, through the Art in the Parks program. It will remain there through August 1, 2024.
