Two women arrested after Cortland County drug probe

In the culmination of a narcotics probe by the Cortland County Drugs Task Force and local agencies, two women from Cortland County are facing several charges.

Amber L. Harris, 35, from Cortland, and Tammy Smith, 49, from Marathon, were detained on September 25, following a traffic halt, as disclosed by the Cortland Sheriffโ€™s Office. The vehicle, operated by Smith, was pulled over by officers of the Cortland Police Department due to multiple traffic violations.

A subsequent search resulted in the discovery of methamphetamine in Smithโ€™s possession. Harris was found carrying a considerable assortment of illegal substances and items including half an ounce of crack cocaineโ€”worth over $1,400 on the streetโ€”morphine, oxycodone pills, various drug paraphernalia, and an undisclosed sum of money. Smith was released with an appearance ticket after processing, while Harris was arraigned in Cortland City Court and is being held without bail.

Authorities have indicated that the investigation is still underway and additional charges may be forthcoming. The arrest of Harris and Smith highlights ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to curb drug trafficking and possession in the region.
