Police say commuters downtown will not be seriously impacted by Former President Donald Trump’s civil fraud trial, set to start today downtown.
The former president has said on social media that he will appear in court Monday. Still, NYPD officials will close roads around the civil courthouse building downtown only briefly while Trump is on the move with his motorcade, according to a police source.
Road closures are not expected as he makes his way south from Trump Tower, where he spent Sunday night after flying in from a campaign event in Iowa, according to CNN.
The civil fraud case brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James accuses Trump, his two eldest sons and several business executives of inflating the values of their company assets to save hundreds of millions of dollars on loans and insurance.
On Sunday evening, Trump posted on Truth Social that he would attend court Monday to “fight for my name and reputation,” calling James racist and calling the case a “sham.”
James is seeking at least $250 million in penalties, along with a ban against Trump and his sons Donald Jr and Eric from running businesses in New York. She also wants a five-year commercial real estate ban against Trump and the Trump Organization.
Trump is expected to appear before Judge Arthur F. Engoron around 10 a.m., and the proceeding should be finished by 11. Police are expecting protesters from both sides to attend.
