New York Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said Monday in his introductory press conference that he expects Pete Alonso to be his first baseman in 2024.
Whether that is the truth and where that falls in his long-term outlook in New York remains to be seen — so let the offseason hot stove begin!
One potential trade suitor has already emerged, per reporter Bruce Levine on 670 The Score’s “Hit & Run with Matt Spiegel.”
“The mumbling out there is the Cubs are going to do everything they can to trade for Pete Alonso from the Mets,” Levine said Monday. … “Sure, he strikes out, but who doesn’t these days? … You’re going to have to trade something really good for him.”
Alonso has one year left on his contract that will likely pay him more than $20 million in arbitration before he becomes a free agent, and until he is extended or traded, the rumors about his future will circulate.
According to The Athletic, the Cubs and Brewers contacted the Mets about Alonso around the trade deadline, with Milwaukee’s conversations more substantial. Levine said that the Cubs would like to pair Alonso with an extension to Cody Bellinger, who enjoyed a bounce-back 2023 and will become a free agent in the offseason.
Alonso batted .217 with an .821 OPS, 46 home runs and 118 RBI this season. Even with the average, he was worth a 122 OPS+ and has a 136 OPS+ for his career. The 28-year-old has become one of the game’s top power hitters, with three 40-home run seasons on his resume.
“Pete (Alonso) is a great player,” Stearns said Monday. “He is also good in the clubhouse and he is also homegrown. All of that matters.
“I know during the summer there was there was some trade speculation, and look, I’ll just say, I expect Pete to be the opening day first baseman next year. Pete’s an important member of this team. He’s an important member of this organization. And I think we’re really fortunate to have him.”
