Syracuse, N.Y. — Today’s high temperature in Central New York could not only set a record for Oct. 4, but tie or break the record for the hottest day ever recorded in the month of October.
The National Weather Service predicts that the high today in Syracuse will be 88 degrees. That would easily break the record for the date, which is 84 degrees, set in 2017.
The hottest October day since records began in 1902 was Oct. 1, 2019, when it reached 88 degrees.
Tuesday’s temperature topped out at 84 degrees, making it the second-hottest Oct. 3 on record. The record is 86 degrees, set in 1951.
The normal high this time of year is 65 degrees.
The high pressure system bringing the abnormal warmth will continue Thursday, when Syracuse could reach 84 degrees. That would be 1 degree shy of the Oct. 5 record of 85, set in 2007.
Temperatures will crash on Friday as a strong cold front sweeps in, the weather service said. The high on Saturday is projected to be 64, and Sunday won’t get warmer than the mid 50s.
That cold front could also bring heavy rain, possibly enough to flood low-lying and urban areas Friday night through Saturday night, the weather service said in issuing a hazardous weather outlook.
