Buffalo preparing to spend millions of dollars on mass shooting memorial

Buffalo is preparing to spend $13 million to $15 million on a memorial to honor the 10 people killed in the May 14, 2022 racist attack at a Tops Markets on Jefferson Avenue, the people who survived it and the community that is grieving, still.

The 5/14 Memorial Commission, Gov. Kathy Hochul and Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown issued Tuesday a request for memorial design concepts, inviting businesses and people to help decide how the story of the mass shooting gets told and who gets to tell it. The city said design submissions should reflect a budget for the memorial of between $13 million and $15 million, including all costs of site acquisition, design, permitting and construction.

Submissions will be accepted from Nov. 1 to Dec. 1.

The Rev. Mark Blue, chairman of the commission, said the city and Hochul have pledged money for the memorial, but the amounts are “still in the works.” The commission also will be doing a campaign to raise funds for it.

“That will be forthcoming,” he said.
