Ming Liu sentenced in record-studio murder; Hears pained, angry words from victim’s family

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.— All the pain and anger that has simmered for nearly three years among family and friends of Jahade Chancey reached a boiling point Wednesday in state Supreme Court, St. George, where a female defendant who pleaded guilty recently in connection with the 23-year-old’s murder heard from the people still dealing with the loss.

Ming Liu, 31, was sentenced by Justice Alexander Jeong to 16 years prison and five years post release supervision for a charge of first-degree manslaughter in connection with the Jan. 10, 2021 shooting that authorities said unfolded during a burglary attempt at Demonlow Studios on Van Duzer St. in Stapleton.

Law enforcement officials said previously that Liu and two male co-defendants were trying to collect money owed to her by an unnamed person affiliated with the studio. She was facing a top charge of second-degree murder and the possibility of life in prison had a jury found her guilty of the charge.

In a victim impact statement delivered Wednesday, a lifelong friend of Chancey described the deceased as a “social butterfly” and a “sweetheart” who loved old school music and “lit up every room he walked in.”

“Jahade was not in gangs,” she said, fighting through tears. “Jahade had never been to jail. Jahade didn’t even have fights.”

Chancey’s older brother, Artaevous Stockton, knew the defendant prior to the incident and addressed a disturbing text exchange with her in the days after the shooting.

“When you started texting my phone … sending the love and all the bull—, trying to cover your tracks, knowing what you all did to my little brother, you are trash,” said Stockton. “Face my family. Face my mother.”

Chancey’s mother, who wore a t-shirt featuring a photo of her son, stepped to the podium next.

Liu, who cried throughout the proceedings, turned toward her.
