POUGHKEEPSIE- A recently published NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll reported President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are evenly matched among registered voters in a 2024 head-to-head contest.
Biden ranked at 49 percent and Trump at 47 percent among registered voters nationally.ย Trump ranked at 50 percent, which is eight percentage points over Biden, at 42 percent, among independents.
Of those voters who said they have an unfavorable opinion of both candidates, Trump leads Biden by two-to-one, with 19 percent of those surveyed undecided and nearly two-thirds of voters do not want Biden to be president, again.ย Six in 10 voters say the same about Trump.
When third party candidates are factored into the 2024 presidential mix, Biden, at 40 percent, and Trump, at 39 percent, remain competitive among voters nationally.ย Three percent say they would vote for a Libertarian candidate, and two percent would vote for a Green Party candidate.ย A relatively large share of voters, totaling 12 percent, say they would support another independent or third-party candidate.
โDespite a whirlwind of activity around them, Americansโ views of Biden and Trump remain locked in,โ says Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion in Poughkeepsie.ย โAt this point, a notable number of voters are considering a third-party option, but that does little to change the competitive contest between Biden and Trump.โ
The poll also reported that most Republicans support another run by former President Trump over any of the other Republicans seeking the nationโs top spot.
Democrats are generally satisfied with Biden as the nominee, as he seeks reelection with an overall job approval rating which remains in the low 40s.ย The poll reported that 42 percent of Americans approve of the job he is doing, and 50 percent disapprove.ย This is little changed from 41 percent last month.
