Brighton Park in the Town of Tonawanda was abuzz Thursday with the activity of excavators, backhoe loaders and other construction vehicles as the town continues to update and add new recreational venues to the park.
It is part of a $20 million expansion and enhancement project. Once completed, the amenities currently under construction on the 13-acre site will include a new 660-seat ice arena; a spray park, with splash pad, slides and a tipping bucket; a regulation rugby/soccer pitch; three sand volleyball courts; and four lighted pickleball courts.
Councilman Carl E. Szarek, who chairs the townโs Youth, Parks and Recreation Committee, led the local media on a tour of the construction site, which is visible to passersby on the I-290. The facilities all are expected to be open by next summer.
Paddock Chevrolet will pay the Town of Tonawanda roughly $3 million over 20 years for the right to put its name on the expanded recreation venues at Brighton Park.
Szarek, a Democrat, is up for re-election to the Town Board next month against Republican Matthew Braun.
