The Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) in the Town of Canandaigua celebrated its 75th anniversary on October 7. Originally conceived during a grocery store discussion in 1945, the CVFD was formally established in 1948 after local residents recognized the need for a community fire service.
Initially operating on a tight budget, the fledgling department resourcefully converted a 1936 Brockway bakery truck, purchased using $350 in donations, into their first fire vehicle. Over the years, the department has evolved, moving through three different firehouses and continually updating its fleet to serve the community better.
Chief Chris Brown reflected on the department’s storied past during the celebration, emphasizing the enduring values and dedication shared by its many volunteers throughout its history.
President Rick Roxin expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from the community and highlighted the recent additions of a new engine and fireboat, symbolizing the department’s ongoing commitment to the towns of Canandaigua and South Bristol.
Past President Bob Finger praised the CVFD’s adaptability, noting its expanded role as a community hub, accommodating activities such as scouting events, Civil Air Patrol meetings, and local family gatherings, alongside its primary emergency response duties.
