NEW YORK, N.Y. — Thousands attended a rally in support of Israel, shutting down Manhattan’s Midtown East Side on Tuesday. The rally was held in response to the surprise weekend attack by Hamas that left a death toll in the Middle East unseen since the 1973 war with Egypt and Syria.
The crowd jammed Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza at 47th Street and Second Avenue, near the United Nations. Second Avenue was eventually closed by police as the crowd spilled onto the streets, paralyzing midtown traffic.
A small group of Ultra-Orthodox anti-Zionist sect Neturei Karta held signs that drew outrage from the pro-Israel crowd. Charter buses were seen nearby and helicopters were above.
Gov. Kathy Hochul, Mayor Eric Adams, other elected officials and religious leaders were expected to attend the rally.
