New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones continues trending in the wrong direction after suffering a neck injury during Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins.
The fifth-year passer did not practice again on Thursday ahead of New York’s road matchup against the vaunted Buffalo Bills on Sunday night — a game they are already substantial underdogs for.
Head coach Brian Daboll expressed optimism earlier this week that Jones would be fine, but it appears he was alluding to the possibility of a long-term absence. Still, Daboll is not ruling him out for the Week 6 clash, which already sees the Giants’ year hanging in the balance.
New York is 1-4 thanks to an inept offense that has seen a significant regression from Jones after a strong 2022 campaign that earned him a four-year, $160 million contract. While a weak offensive line that has been without Andrew Thomas since Week 1 hasn’t helped, Jones has thrown for just 884 yards and two touchdowns compared to six interceptions.
If Jones is unable to go, Tyrod Taylor will start under center for the Giants. The 13-year-veteran came in for Jones when he suffered the injury at the beginning of the fourth quarter off a crunching hit by Dolphins linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel, who got a clean shot at the Giants’ starter.
He’ll be facing a Bills team that has had to stew on an upset loss in London to the Jacksonville Jaguars in which it allowed a season-high 474 total yards, including 196 on the ground. A ground-heavy game could be in the cards for the Giants but without Saquon Barkley, success becomes less likely with Matt Breida and rookie back Eric Gray holding down the backfield.
