Wayne school board honors bus crash survivors; community lauds bus driver’s heroism

The Wayne Central School Board recognized 22 students and three staff members during its recent meeting for their bravery following a fiery bus crash two weeks ago.

The incident occurred when a Subaru collided with the school bus, resulting in both vehicles bursting into flames. Tragically, the Subaru driver and his dog perished in the crash, but all aboard the bus managed to escape safely, thanks in part to the quick actions of bus driver Deb Hibbard. In appreciation for their courage, each survivor was honored with plaques, flags, and certificates.

The community has played a pivotal role in aiding the students’ transition back to normalcy, donating essentials like calculators and backpacks since the victims lost all their belongings in the fire. Webster’s community went a step further, donating a replacement bus to the school. Hibbard, who received special commendation, humbly remarked, “I did my job that afternoon, it’s what we train to do.”

A representative for Congresswoman Tenney has indicated plans to introduce this story into the congressional record, ensuring its remembrance in Washington, D.C.
