Gov. Hochul signs bill expanding alcohol sales on Sundays, lightens other restrictions

It’s easier than ever to get a drink on the weekends.

Relaxing some of the last vestiges of restrictive, Prohibition-era alcohol sales laws, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a package of legislation that will allow for the retail sale of beer on any day of the week, including Sundays, and expand the hours of alcohol sales on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Other laws approved by Hochul expand the validity of a brewer’s license from one year to three years and make it easier to dispense alcohol and have multiple businesses share a liquor license.

“Across New York, breweries, distilleries and other alcoholic beverage businesses are creating jobs and expanding economic opportunity,” Hochul said. “I’m proud to sign this legislation that will modernize the laws governing the sales of alcoholic beverages in New York.”

The new laws follow on the heels of legislation Hochul signed as part of the current year’s budget that allows restaurants to sell takeout drinks and permit caterers to apply for off-premises licenses to serve liquor at events.ย
