“Saturday Night Live” has returned for the first time since the writer’s strike shut down late-night television back in May. “SNL” alum Pete Davidson returned as host, joking about his many relationships in a “Barbie” spoof song “I’m Just Pete.” Other highlights included sendups of Christopher Columbus and Deion Sanders, a Fox NFL Sunday spoof, performances by Ice Spice, and cameos by Travis Kelce and (separately) Taylor Swift.

‘The Sandlot’ star’s mother murdered

E! News reports “The Sandlot” star Marty York, who played Alan “Yeah-Yeah” McLennan in the 1993 baseball film, is the mourning the death of his mother, Deanna Esmaeel. Esmaeel, a deputy in the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office in Crescent City, California, was found dead Thursday at her home at age 67. Her boyfriend Daniel James Walter, who recently changed his name to Edward Patrick Davies, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. “ “This is the hardest post I’ll ever have to write but I found out from the sheriff department last night that my mother was murdered by a man she was seeing,” York wrote on social media. “The emotions I have are horrible right now between rage, vengeance, crying… I just want my mom back.”

Michael Caine retires

Legendary actor Michael Caine says he’s retiring, for good this time. “I kept saying I’m gonna retire. Well, I am now because I figure I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead, and it’s got incredible reviews,” said the 90-year-old actor in a new BBC interview about his upcoming film, “The Great Escaper.” “The only parts I’m likely to get now are old men, 90-year-old men.
