Authorities are searching for suspects following a violent home invasion in the Town of Macedon early Friday morning. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call at approximately 4:58 a.m. from a residence on Route 31F, where a couple reported being threatened and restrained by intruders.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, three unknown males entered the home while the residents were asleep. Two of the intruders appeared to be armed and brandished guns while threatening the couple. The suspects, described as Spanish-speaking, tied up the victims and stole multiple items from the residence.

The male homeowner sustained minor injuries during the incident and was treated on-site by the Town of Macedon Ambulance. The suspects fled the scene and remain at large.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the New York State Police, the Town of Macedon Police, and Town of Macedon Ambulance, continues to investigate the robbery. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office at (315) 946-9711 or submit a tip via the department’s website.

No further details about the stolen items or the suspects’ identities have been released.

Rural hospitals and those that treat patients regardless of their ability to pay have been held back by federal regulations that limit their access to funding for critical infrastructure projects, according to a recent policy report. The lack of funding has made it difficult for these hospitals to stay financially viable, leading to deepening health care disparities, particularly for underserved communities.

The report, Structural Determinants of Health: Hospitals’ Unequal Capital Investments Drive Health Inequalities, was co-authored by Rosemary Batt, the Alice Cook Professor of Women and Work at Cornell’s ILR School, and Eileen Appelbaum, co-director of the Center for Economic Policy Research. Batt and Appelbaum argue that U.S. policymakers must reevaluate the way government funding is distributed to health care facilities in order to address these inequities.

Long-standing federal policies perpetuate disparities

The authors point to several federal policies, including the Hill-Burton Act of 1946 and the Medicare and Medicaid Act of 1965, which have favored large nonprofit hospitals while leaving smaller, rural, and low-income hospitals at a disadvantage. These laws have created a system where hospitals in wealthier areas have better access to capital, allowing them to maintain and upgrade their facilities, while those serving poorer communities struggle to keep pace.

“Hospitals’ ability to raise capital is often a direct result of federal laws that disproportionately benefit large nonprofit health care systems,” said Batt. “This leaves rural hospitals and those serving Black, Indigenous, and immigrant communities unable to maintain up-to-date facilities, putting their patients at risk.”

In a commanding performance, 18-year-old Connor Zilisch claimed his fifth ARCA Menards Series win of the 2024 season at Watkins Glen International, leading every lap of the 41-lap race. Zilisch, who was fastest in practice and took pole position, avenged last year’s runner-up finish with a flawless flag-to-flag victory.

William Sawalich, Zilisch’s closest rival, trailed 12.778 seconds behind, with both drivers set to battle for the ARCA East crown next weekend in Bristol. Xfinity Series regular Brandon Jones finished third, while Andres Perez made an impressive run from the back of the field to place fourth. Connor Mosack completed the top five.

Local drivers saw mixed results. Buffalo native Andy Jankowiak secured 13th, while Rochester’s Chris Werth recovered from a spin to finish 19th. Complete results can be found here. The ARCA Menards Series returns to action at Bristol Motor Speedway next Thursday.
