Brooklyn’s pet stores push back on retail sale ban — but activists say it’s much-needed • Brooklyn Paper https://newyorkinquisitor.com/new-york-city/brooklyn/brooklyns-pet-stores-push-back-on-retail-sale-ban-but-activists-say-its-much-needed-brooklyn-paper/ https://newyorkinquisitor.com/new-york-city/brooklyn/brooklyns-pet-stores-push-back-on-retail-sale-ban-but-activists-say-its-much-needed-brooklyn-paper/#respond Thu, 12 Dec 2024 21:34:55 +0000 https://newyorkinquisitor.com/new-york-city/brooklyn/brooklyns-pet-stores-push-back-on-retail-sale-ban-but-activists-say-its-much-needed-brooklyn-paper/

How much is that doggie in the window? The state says it’s not for sale.

Brooklyn’s pet store owners, known for selling furry friends, are hoping legal intervention will halt the incoming statewide ban, which they say will be detrimental to business in the lead-up to the holiday season.

In December 2022, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a bill banning the sale of dogs, cats, and bunnies at retail pet stores, intent on improving the welfare of furry friends by ending the “puppy mill-to-pet store pipeline.”

The pet sale ban takes effect this Sunday, Dec. 15, impacting over 160 brick and motor stores statewide, five of which are in Brooklyn. Any stores found to be selling pets after the deadline can face penalties of up to $1,000 per violation.

Last month, the City Council passed a similar bill — sponsored by Bay Ridge Council Member Justin Brannan — that would ban retail pet stores or other unlicensed locations from selling cats, dogs, and rabbits — with a fine for $500 per day if violated. Mayor Eric Adams has yet to sign off on the bill, but if he does, it will go into effect the same day, Dec. 15.

‘We’ll figure something out’

Benjamin Santiago, the general manager of Puppy Boutique in Bensonhurst, spoke to Brooklyn Paper Monday surrounded by some 20 pups he hopes will be sold before Sunday’s deadline.

“We’ll figure something out. These guys are not going to go back anywhere. They’re going to end up being in someone’s home. I’ll even grab a couple myself,” he said.

According to Santiago, Puppy Boutique has been on 17th Avenue for the last 30 years and employs about 12 workers, who are now concerned for their livelihoods.

He stressed that their pets come from reputable breeders inspected by federal authorities.

“I understand that they’re trying to cut off the puppy mills, but what does our pet store have to do with that?” asked Santiago. “The job of eliminating most of those puppy mills is for the FDA, they…

Police are looking for this suspect who allegedly pummeled a traffic agent in Brooklyn on Wednesday after receiving a summons on his BMW.

A brute in Brooklyn allegedly pummeled a traffic agent on Wednesday after receiving a summons on his BMW, police said.

According to law enforcement sources, the incident occurred on Nov. 20 at around 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Avenue U and E. Eighth Street in Sheepshead Bay.

Leading up to the attack, the 57-year-old victim, an NYPD traffic enforcement agent, was on duty when the suspect approached him in an orange BMW, police said. The driver then got out of the car and began arguing with the agent, who was in full uniform, over a summons that had previously been issued to his vehicle.

The scene turned violent when the suspect punched the agent repeatedly in the face, according to authorities. He then fled the scene in the BMW to parts unknown before officers from the 61st Precinct arrived.

Meanwhile, the victim suffered pain and swelling to his face and lips. EMS responded and brought him to NYC Health and Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health in stable condition.

Police on Thursday released surveillance photos of the suspect and the getaway vehicle. The photos show him wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants.

A Brooklyn man has been accused of murdering his father, whose body was discovered at a luxury hotel in Ireland earlier this week.

Henry McGowan, 30, of Carroll Gardens, appeared in Portlaoise District Court in Ireland on Thursday, where he faced charges stemming from the alleged murder of his father, John McGowan, 60.

Irish authorities say they found John McGowan dead at the five-star Ballyfin Demesne hotel in North County Laois on Tuesday evening.

The son was arrested at the scene and charged with murder on Thursday morning following an investigation led by Ireland’s national police force, An Garda Síochána.

Officers responded to the Ballyfin Demesne, a high-end hotel frequented by American celebrities, and reportedly found the elder McGowan’s body in the resort’s leisure center around 8 p.m. local time.

An Garda Síochána have not yet confirmed the cause of death but indicated it will be determined through a post-mortem examination.

Local media reported Thursday that Judge Andrew Cody ordered McGowan to remain in custody at nearby Cloverhill Prison, where he will undergo an immediate psychiatric assessment at his defense attorney’s request.

McGowan is scheduled to make his next court appearance via video link on Monday, according to Laois Live.

Attorneys representing McGowan did not respond to Brooklyn Paper’s queries by press time.

The Brooklyn Nets have debuted this season’s Nike NBA City Edition uniform, as seen on guard Cam Thomas.

The Brooklyn Nets unveiled their 2024-25 Nike NBA City Edition uniform on Thursday, marking the second collaboration with Brooklyn artist KAWS and underscoring the team’s commitment to supporting local designers.

To celebrate the launch, Nets players Nic Claxton and Cam Johnson will meet fans at Brooklyn Fanatics at Barclays Center on Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. for an exclusive signing session.

The new sportswear stays with the team’s signature black-and-white color scheme, while incorporating KAWS’ abstract lettering and a gray color palette with bold accent hues.

This partnership adds to the Nets’ tradition of collaborating with global icons and creators from Brooklyn.

According to a team spokesperson, the design is inspired by KAWS’ 10-part artwork, TENSION, incorporating his graphic style to feature a remixed Nets logo on the shorts. KAWS also added his distinctive “XX” motif to the waistband.

Differing from last year’s NBA City Edition uniform, KAWS displayed “Brooklyn” on the chest of the jersey instead of “Nets” “to proudly represent and celebrate the team’s home borough,” team representatives said.

“It was a pleasure to design my second City Edition uniform for the Nets, honoring my local team and community while paying tribute to the borough of Brooklyn,” KAWS said in statement.

KAWS paid homage to himself with design elements similar to his own art including his distinct "XX" motif.

Nike first introduced the City Edition line in 2017 to celebrate and honor each NBA team’s fans and unique community attributes. Previous launches honored Brooklyn icons The Notorious B.I.G. and Jean-Michel Basquiat, but this year celebrates its designer, KAWS.

Andrew Karson, executive vice president of marketing at Nets parent company BSE Global, said the partnership with the Brooklyn resident not only spotlights local talent but also helps the Brooklyn Nets better connect with their fanbase.

“Our latest City Edition collaboration continues the Nets’ commitment to cultural innovation and its…

A new competition baking show on Food Network is bringing the magic of Harry Potter to a grand scale.

“Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking” is a larger-than-life new baking show that fully immerses contestants in the Harry Potter universe. Hosted by James and Oliver Phelps (who play Fred and George Weasley in the movie franchise), the show blends legendary storytelling and fantastical edible creations all on the competition floor.

“It’s a baking competition, it starts off with 9 teams of two bakers who didn’t know each other before they got into the competition. These guys are professionals in what they do. They’re the best of the best in America,” said Oliver Phelps. “They’re going for the trophy of the Wizards of Baking Champions and each bake is based on a set from the actual studios in London, and they have to come up with some inspiration from that.”

“Wizards of Baking” pairs the competitors into teams of two and has them compete alongside each other throughout the duration of the competition. Each week, the bakers make grand, eye-catching creations based on different Harry Potter sets.

The show was shot at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Watford, England, and to raise the stakes, contestants are given access to the actual film sets, including The Great Hall at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Platform 9¾, Gringotts Wizarding Bank and The Burrow. The winners will be awarded the first-ever Wizards of Baking Cup and will have the opportunity to appear in a new Harry Potter cookbook.

“Everything we’ve done with Harry Potter has always been the best of the best. The theme parks aren’t just a ride with a sticker on it,” said James Phelps. “They built the world there, the movies, they ran for eight movies and they were some of the biggest ones that have ever been made, they’re always top-top. And just like when we did this show, it is no exception.”

Among those competing in “Wizards of Baking” are New…

A woman and two men have been indicted in connection to a series of anti-Semitic incidents targeting members of the Brooklyn Museum’s board of directors, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced Monday.

The 25-count indictment charges the defendants with hate crimes and vandalism in Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, and Manhattan’s Lenox Hill.

The defendants — Taylor Pelton of Queens and Samuel Seligson and Gabriel Schubiner of Brooklyn — face multiple charges, including making a terroristic threat as a hate crime, criminal mischief, and conspiracy.

Schubiner was arraigned on Nov. 4 before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun and released without bail, while Seligson and Pelton are expected to be arraigned next week.

In a statement, Gonzalez expressed concern over the nature of the alleged crimes.

“Acts of vandalism that target individuals in their own homes are a deeply disturbing violation meant to intimidate, terrorize, and instill fear,” the DA said. “These defendants allegedly targeted museum board members with threats and anti-Semitic graffiti based on their perceived heritage.”

According to the District Attorney’s office, the trio was allegedly captured on surveillance footage gathering supplies in Crown Heights on June 12, 2024, before targeting the homes of individuals affiliated with the Brooklyn Museum. Evidence indicates they tried to conceal their identities by painting over security cameras during the acts of vandalism.

Cruising to win: $1 billion Powerball winner Pug “Beast” placed third in the 26th annual Great PUPkin Costume Contest at Fort Greene Park.

Canines and their two-legged friends had a howling good time at the 26th annual Great PUPkin Dog Costume Contest in Fort Greene Park on Oct. 26.

Brooklyn’s largest and most creative puppy costume contest drew over 1,000 attendees who cheered on pups strutting elaborate outfits. The themes ranged from movies, opera, and fairy tales to the newly crowned WNBA champions, the New York Liberty, and iconic Brooklyn landmarks.

PUPkin event manager Alana Davis told Brooklyn Paper that the contest serves a fundraiser for the Fort Greene Park Users and Pets Society, a nonprofit supporting the community’s 1,500-plus dog owners. The event is free, but attendees are encouraged to donate, and there is a $20 entry fee for participants.

“We provide poop bags, water bowls — we’re part of the lawn rotation program in Fort Greene Park. We make the park safe for dog owners and non-dog owners [and] provide puppy training,” Davis said, calling the contest “a nice fall day in Brooklyn.”

“Everyone’s here to smile and to root for the underdog, literally,” she added. “It’s a great feeling of community.”

The Scoobie Doobie Brothers warmed up the crowd, which began gathering around 9:30 a.m. for the contest’s noon kickoff. This year’s judges included Council Member Crystal Hudson, Julie Raskin, vice chair of Fort Greene Park, and Brooke LaMantia, a writer for The Cut.

A pug named Beast, dressed as a $1 billion Powerball winner (complete with a Ferrari prop), placed third. Pooch Otter took second, channeling Liberace in a costume adorned with lace, sequins and pearls, seated by a toy piano. The grand prize went to Gemma, an audience favorite dressed as a Babybel cheese, who wowed the crowd with tricks.
