The Kid Mero (real name Joel Martinez), one of the biggest entertainers from the Bronx, is working to bring up the next generation of new talent — coming from unexpected places.

“There’s a dude right now in some random country, town — spin the globe, point a finger, and there’s a guy who’s the most brilliant biochemist of our time. And he’s just sitting in a tree reading a book, because he doesn’t have access,” said Mero in an interview with the Bronx Times. “And that’s what I think the Bronx needs more of too — access. And if I can do that, I would love to be the guy to spearhead that.”

While Mero and his wife, Heather, are now raising their four kids, ages 13, 11, 9 and 7, in what he called a “super suburban” New Jersey neighborhood, he never fully left the Bronx, remaining committed to uplifting the borough and the talented people within it.

Mero is best known for his work with Desus Nice (real name Daniel Baker), a fellow Bronxite who was his comedy partner for nearly a decade. Desus and Mero’s authentic perspectives hilariously embodied New York City culture.

Their first podcast, “Desus vs. Mero,” first launched in 2013 and later became the “Bodega Boys” pod, which turned into television with shows on Viceland and Showtime, where they interviewed fellow Bronx native U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and celebrities including David Letterman, Spike Lee, Derek Jeter and Denzel Washington. In 2020, Desus and Mero published a New York Times bestselling book, “God-Level Knowledge Darts: Life Lessons from the Bronx” (with his sections written in his signature ALL CAPS style).

But alas, in 2022, the duo went their separate ways, and fans still aren’t over it. But Mero remains a Bronx Dominican-American superstar who keeps us up-to-date on new talent and laughing along the way — with more big things coming soon for him and his team.

Mero is currently between seasons of “Victory Light,” a podcast he…

Special victims detectives in the Bronx nabbed an alleged rapist hours after he violently attacked a woman on a street early Wednesday morning.

Gregory Williams, 21, who resided at the Men’s Employment Shelter on Westchester Avenue in Parkchester faces two counts of first-degree rape and other charges for the heinous attack on a 26-year-old woman near an apartment building at 1370 Virginia Ave., about a half-mile away from the shelter.

Law enforcement sources said the sexual assault occurred at about 3:30 a.m. on Dec. 11, when Williams allegedly approached the victim from behind and punched her multiple times on the right side of the body. Police sources said the victim did not know her attacker.

After delivering the body blows, authorities reported, the suspect proceeded to rape the victim. Moments later, the perpetrator fled the location on foot, and was last seen heading southbound along Virginia Avenue, then turning eastbound on McGraw Avenue.

The incident was reported to the 43rd Precinct. EMS rushed the woman to a local hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.

During their investigation, sources familiar with the case said, detectives obtained video near the crime scene which allegedly showed Williams fleeing from the Virginia Avenue site back to the shelter on Westchester Avenue.

Within hours, cops said, detectives located Williams and had him positively identified as the alleged rapist. The Bronx Special Victims Squad formally charged him at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon with first-degree rape, third-degree assault, third-degree sexual abuse and second-degree harassment.

Police are investigating after a speeding BMW driver struck and killed a 60-year-old man in the Bronx during a chain reaction collision early Saturday morning.

Law enforcement sources said officers from the 47th Precinct responded to a 911 call of a pedestrian struck at the corner of Givan Avenue and Eastchester Road in Eastchester just after midnight on Nov. 30.

Based on an investigation by the NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad, police learned that a 24-year-old male driver of a 2013 BMW 328 XI was traveling at a high speed eastbound on Eastchester Road, when he struck a pickup truck that was heading northbound on Givan Avenue.

At the same time, Dwight Downer of the Bronx was standing next to his 2007 Nissan Murano when the BMW driver hit him along with a parked and unattended 2020 Acura MDX and the Nissan, police said.

After striking the pedestrian, the BMW driver collided with a parked and unattended 2014 Honda Accord and a 2007 Toyota Camry, according to authorities.

EMS responded to the scene and rushed Downer to NYC Health and Hospitals/Jacobi where he was pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, the BMW driver stayed at the scene. EMS later brought him to the same hospital for minor injuries. No charges have yet been filed against him, police said, but the investigation is ongoing.

The 47th Precinct saw a total of three traffic fatalities year-to-date through Nov. 24, down by one (or 25%) compared to the same period in 2023, according to the latest police data.

NYPD officers, elected officials and community members cut the ribbon on the new 40th Precinct station house in the South Bronx on Nov. 20.

According to the NYPD, the new location at 567 East 149th Street began serving residents on Nov. 18. Construction on the stationhouse began in 2018, and it was a long time coming.

“Today, we are fulfilling the pledge we made to the people of the South Bronx a decade ago,” said NYPD Interim Commissioner Thomas Donlon, who has since been replaced by Jessica S. Tisch, the permanent NYPD Commissioner.

“Our promise was to build a new, state-of-the-art NYPD facility that would be unlike any other precinct in New York City, and one that truly belongs to this community.

The $85-million facility is the first station house to include a dedicated space for neighborhood events — a decision met with praise from local electeds. The station house, which is 45,260 square feet, also includes areas for officer training and for physical fitness.

“The addition of a community room reflects our commitment to creating spaces that will strengthen relationships between our police officers and community members,” said Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark also emphasized the importance of bringing people into the station house on a regular, non-emergency basis. “Having a community room inside for residents to use for meetings and other events brings them into the stationhouse for positive reasons and is a great way to strengthen the relationship between cops and the people they serve,” she said. “We need to modernize all of our precincts.”

In addition to its community focus, the facility was also designed for environmental sustainability, featuring a planted green roof and high-efficiency…

Local artist brings public art project, “Pulse of NY,” to the Bronx and beyond https://newyorkinquisitor.com/new-york-city/the-bronx/local-artist-brings-public-art-project-pulse-of-ny-to-the-bronx-and-beyond/ https://newyorkinquisitor.com/new-york-city/the-bronx/local-artist-brings-public-art-project-pulse-of-ny-to-the-bronx-and-beyond/#respond Wed, 13 Nov 2024 21:02:26 +0000 https://newyorkinquisitor.com/new-york-city/the-bronx/local-artist-brings-public-art-project-pulse-of-ny-to-the-bronx-and-beyond/

If you walk anywhere in the city between now and March, you may spot Westchester-based artist Cherie Corso’s interactive public art project — and don’t be surprised when she invites you to step on it.

For her project, “Pulse of NY,” Corso invites people to walk across a five-by-five-foot painted canvas. If they’re willing to stop, she traces their footprint onto the canvas — and some choose to leave their mark in more personal ways, adding their initials, a doodle or a shoutout to their favorite sports team.

Corso is creating a canvas for each of the five boroughs, with Manhattan and the Bronx already underway. During a stop at the Arthur Avenue Retail Market, Corso told the Bronx Times that she makes a point to roll out the canvases at all hours of the day and night, in different neighborhoods and environments, from subway stations to college campuses (most recently Fordham University) to markets, shops and events.

“That’s what New York is, getting the energy of everyone and everything,” she said.

For Corso, the project captures snapshots of the multitudes who make up New York City — and provides an antidote to the isolation and loneliness that are common even in a massive, crowded city. Rather than working in her studio as usual, this project has allowed Corso to interact with locals, tourists and all kinds of people, which she said “feeds the soul.”

“I think everybody is connected, and we all have something to say,” she said.

Corso started the Bronx portion of “Pulse of NY” on her birthday, Oct. 17. After having dinner at a restaurant in Little Italy, she spontaneously rolled out the canvas on the sidewalk and invited people to walk across it.

The canvases — rolled up in a long umbrella bag — go with her just about everywhere these days, she said. “When you’re in a project, you gotta commit to it.”

Corso is helped in her effort by student members of the Fordham Business Development…

Bronx hit hardest as FDNY battles record brush fires amid historic drought – Bronx Times https://newyorkinquisitor.com/new-york-city/the-bronx/bronx-hit-hardest-as-fdny-battles-record-brush-fires-amid-historic-drought-bronx-times/ https://newyorkinquisitor.com/new-york-city/the-bronx/bronx-hit-hardest-as-fdny-battles-record-brush-fires-amid-historic-drought-bronx-times/#respond Wed, 13 Nov 2024 20:33:34 +0000 https://newyorkinquisitor.com/new-york-city/the-bronx/bronx-hit-hardest-as-fdny-battles-record-brush-fires-amid-historic-drought-bronx-times/

Amid a historic drought, the Fire Department of New York City (FDNY) has reported an unprecedented spike in brush fires across the city, with the Bronx bearing the brunt of the blazes.

Between Oct. 29 and Nov. 12, the FDNY was dispatched to put out a record-breaking 229 brush fires, with 67 of those occurring in the Bronx, 56 in Queens, 51 in Brooklyn, 24 in Manhattan and 17 in Staten Island.

Fire Commissioner Robert S. Tucker cautioned Bronx residents and all New Yorkers about the elevated brush fire risk, emphasizing the need for safety measures.

“Remarkably dry conditions in October and so far in November have resulted in a historic amount of brush fires over the last two weeks, and we need the public to remain vigilant,” said Commissioner Tucker. “With minimal rainfall, dry vegetation, and windy conditions, the risk of fast-spreading fires poses a real threat to our city and FDNY members.”

The sharp rise in brush fires is unprecedented. In a typical October, the FDNY responds to around 200 brush fires—based on the past three years. This year, that number was exceeded in just two weeks.

On Nov. 2, Mayor Eric Adams and the Department of Environmental Protection declared a city-wide drought watch following October, the city’s driest month on record. The drought conditions, paired with warmer temperatures, have left Bronx green spaces dry and vulnerable to ignition.

With over 2,000 acres of forested land, the Bronx is the city’s second greenest borough, according to the NYC Nature Map, creating more fuel for potential fires. On Nov. 4, the vast expanses of Van Cortlandt Park were ablaze, with thick smoke visible for miles. FDNY responded to four separate fires in the park simultaneously, utilizing drones to locate and contain flames, NBC New York reported.

That same day, Mayor Adams implemented a ban on outdoor…

NYPD teams up with Big Ocean, K-Pop first hard-of-hearing act for surprise visit to Bronx school for deaf children https://newyorkinquisitor.com/new-york-city/the-bronx/nypd-teams-up-with-big-ocean-k-pop-first-hard-of-hearing-act-for-surprise-visit-to-bronx-school-for-deaf-children/ https://newyorkinquisitor.com/new-york-city/the-bronx/nypd-teams-up-with-big-ocean-k-pop-first-hard-of-hearing-act-for-surprise-visit-to-bronx-school-for-deaf-children/#respond Wed, 13 Nov 2024 18:10:50 +0000 https://newyorkinquisitor.com/new-york-city/the-bronx/nypd-teams-up-with-big-ocean-k-pop-first-hard-of-hearing-act-for-surprise-visit-to-bronx-school-for-deaf-children/

NYPD teamed up with K-Pop boy band Big Ocean Tuesday to surprise students at St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf to empower children living with impairments.

Big Ocean are K-Pop’s first hard-of-hearing act who have dedicated themselves to sharing their story of resilience while also spreading awareness on hearing impairments and breaking through barriers. After learning about the NYPD’s initiatives in working with the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, and vice versa, both the boys in blue and the performers banded together to spread a message of hope.

“Here we practice American sign language, but [Big Ocean] gets to bring a different insight which is Korean Sign Language (KSL) and they incorporated International Sing Language (ISL) into their performance. I think it’s a great engagement piece with the students here, just letting them know that the deaf community can be involved in musicals, performances or dancing, and just arts and craft. They bring a spotlight to that,” NYPD Detective Angel Familia said. He also admired that Big Ocean utilizes vibrating watches and other metronome technology that enables the group to stay on rhythm.

Big Ocean’s members Hyunjin, Chanyeon, and Jiseok are hard-of-hearing musicians. At three years old Hyunjin lost his hearing after a severe fever. He underwent cochlear surgery and began to find solace in music. Chanyeon was 11 years old when he too suffered from a fever and lost his hearing. He underwent cochlear implant surgery and is now the group’s main rapper. Jiseok, the youngest member was born hard-of-hearing and became passionate about K-Pop music thanks to his love for dance.

Each of these young men have persevered through stereotypes and social stigmas that attempted to dictate their future. They were constantly told that they would only lead a life of limitation by society, but they were not discouraged from their dreams. They found a kinship between each other and music and spent about two…

According to law enforcement sources, the victim was on the Bx8 bus near East Gun Hill Road and Bronxwood Avenue in Williamsbridge at around 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 25 when the suspect approached him and violently punched him twice in the face.

Police could not confirm if anything was said leading up to the attack. But after repeatedly pummeling the young straphanger, the perp allegedly said, “Oh, I like this,” authorities described.

The beating escalated when the suspect whipped out a knife and stabbed the boy in his left ear and right arm, law enforcement sources said.

The suspect managed to flee the scene in an unknown direction before officers from the 47th Precinct arrived.
