Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley has announced his candidacy to chair the Democratic National Committee, stepping into a leadership race as the party faces significant challenges.

With no control of the White House or Congress in 2025, Democrats are grappling with the aftermath of a tough election and the prospect of a second Trump presidency.

O’Malley, who also served as Baltimore mayor and Social Security commissioner, pitched himself as a “turnaround manager” focused on rebuilding the party’s connection with voters, particularly on economic issues.

While highlighting lessons from Howard Dean’s 50-state strategy, O’Malley vowed to prioritize collaboration and forward-thinking reforms. The race to succeed Jaime Harrison as DNC chair is expected to include multiple candidates ahead of the 2025 election.

Two Rochester-area nursing homes ranked among America’s best by Newsweek https://newyorkinquisitor.com/state/finger-lakes/two-rochester-area-nursing-homes-ranked-among-americas-best-by-newsweek/ https://newyorkinquisitor.com/state/finger-lakes/two-rochester-area-nursing-homes-ranked-among-americas-best-by-newsweek/#respond Thu, 14 Nov 2024 20:57:00 +0000 https://newyorkinquisitor.com/state/finger-lakes/two-rochester-area-nursing-homes-ranked-among-americas-best-by-newsweek/

Two Rochester Regional Health facilities, Park Ridge Living Center and Edna Tina Wilson Living Center, have been named among the best nursing homes in New York State on Newsweek’s prestigious “America’s Best Nursing Homes 2025” list.

The ranking, released in October, reflects the exceptional quality of care provided at both facilities. Park Ridge Living Center earned the #5 spot, while Edna Tina Wilson Living Center secured #10 in the category for nursing homes with 100-149 beds.

“At Rochester Regional Health, our mission is to uplift humanity through care for our community,” said Richard “Chip” Davis, PhD, CEO of Rochester Regional Health. “This recognition from Newsweek acknowledges the exceptional talent of our teams at Park Ridge Living Center and Edna Tina Wilson Living Center. Their dedication represents the highest standards of care and showcases our steadfast commitment to enhancing the lives of the individuals, families, and communities we serve.”

This marks the second consecutive year Park Ridge Living Center has made the list, highlighting its sustained excellence. Both facilities’ recognition underscores the commitment of Rochester Regional Health’s long-term care teams.

“Being recognized by Newsweek for our excellence in long-term care is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our team members at both Park Ridge and Edna Tina Wilson,” said Denis Vinnik, Vice President of Long Term Care at Rochester Regional Health. “Every day, our teams strive to provide high-quality, compassionate care, and this recognition only strengthens our resolve to continue enhancing the well-being of our residents.”

Newsweek’s rankings are based on rigorous evaluations, including data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Factors like facility performance, accreditations, peer recommendations, and resident satisfaction were critical in determining the 1,050 nursing homes recognized nationwide out of 14,800 evaluated.

This week Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck was on Inside the FLX discussing a number of items, including how his department is preparing for a series of assessments and audits across its divisions while facing a challenging 2025 budget planning process with the county Legislature.

The Sheriff’s Office has recently increased revenue by housing incarcerated individuals from nearby counties, including Jefferson and Oswego, as well as a significant number from Tompkins County while its jail undergoes remodeling. Additionally, federal detainees housed in Cayuga County facilities contribute to the budget. Sheriff Schenck highlighted these board-ins as a key revenue source for the Sheriff’s Office amid the county’s budget constraints.

Sheriff Schenck acknowledged that budget discussions with the county Legislature have proven difficult, with fiscal constraints likely to impact the 2025 budget. He underscored the importance of maintaining funding for public safety and ensuring that the department remains fully staffed and adequately equipped, despite the financial challenges.

A summer 2025 accreditation assessment is scheduled for the department’s Road Patrol Division, which will be conducted by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). In preparation, the division has updated its policies, procedures, and records, and is close to completing an audit of its evidence vaults. Sheriff Schenck noted that these extensive updates are crucial to ensuring the department meets state standards.

Meanwhile, the Custody Division is preparing for its own accreditation assessment, slated for November, by the New York State Sheriff’s Association’s Corrections Accreditation Program. This assessment will involve a thorough review of the division’s operations by assessors from the Sheriff’s Association.

Additionally, Sheriff Schenck said the office’s participation in “No Shave November,”…
