CARMEL – Feeling lousy with an upset stomach, nausea and diarrhea?

You may be one of the latest victims of a gastrointestinal illness that has made dozens of people sick in the past 10 days.

The Putnam County Health Department’s Outbreak Team is investigating reports of gastrointestinal illness related to multiple events throughout the county and according to Shanna Siegel, Putnam Health Department’s Public Health Educator, “We are working with event organizers to identify potential cases. If any further information is needed, the team may reach out to impacted individuals directly.”

Siegel noted the incidence of gastrointestinal illnesses is being experienced throughout the Hudson Valley and New York State. “Residents are reminded to stay home when sick, and practice frequent and proper hand washing to help prevent illness. This type of illness can be very contagious. If you are experiencing nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, do not prepare or handle food for at least 48 hours after your last symptoms. Clean impacted areas right away, then disinfect with a bleach solution or an EPA-registered disinfectant effective against norovirus, which is a common source of gastrointestinal illness. If you are experiencing extreme symptoms, contact your healthcare provider. More information can be found at https://www.cdc.gov/norovirus/prevention/index.html”

The seriousness of the health crisis prompted Robert Cuomo, Putnam County’s director of Emergency Medical Services, to issue an advisory Friday to all emergency providers. “EMS personnel are advised to be especially diligent during this time in the use of standard precautions and appropriate PPE. We would all like to be well for the holidays, so please be careful!”

Student stabbed off campus in Liberty https://newyorkinquisitor.com/state/mid-hudson/student-stabbed-off-campus-in-liberty/ https://newyorkinquisitor.com/state/mid-hudson/student-stabbed-off-campus-in-liberty/#respond Fri, 13 Dec 2024 02:22:44 +0000 https://newyorkinquisitor.com/state/mid-hudson/student-stabbed-off-campus-in-liberty/

LIBERTY – A student who was not from Liberty was stabbed off campus at the end of the school day on Thursday, Liberty Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patrick Sullivan said. The condition of the student was not immediately known.

The incident, which did involve students from Liberty, remains under police investigation.

Sullivan said the safety of students and staff is taken very seriously. He said all of the school buildings are equipped with cameras, accessible by Liberty Police, and a school resource officer is stationed at each building during school hours as well as at after-hours events on the campuses.

All of the buildings require keycard access and guest access is only through a single point of entry, the superintendent said. Regular drills are also held to practice safety procedures.

“We investigate all reports of potential threats to our school community,” Sullivan said. “We encourage everyone to be proactive in safety with the adage, ‘see something, say something’ and report immediate concerns to a trusted adult, administration or law enforcement.”

He said students are also “encouraged to lean on their school counseling department if they are in crisis, have concerns over their safety or just need to talk.” Counselors are available to talk to anyone who wishes to speak with them following this incident, he said.

“Out of an abundance of caution and to help our faculty and students feel safer, there will be an increased police presence on the middle school/high school campus (Friday),” Sullivan said.

MILFORD, PA – A 41-year-old Port Jervis man has been sentenced to nine to 20 years in Pennsylvania state prison after pleading guilty to attempting to engage in sexual conduct with a girl under the age of 18.

According to the affidavit of probable cause supporting the charge, an undercover detective from the district attorney’s office assumed the identity of a 14-year-old girl on social media.

From February 29 to March 20, Robert Acoveno continued to communicate with the undercover detective and planned to meet with the 14-year-old girl to engage in sex.

Once Acoveno was taken into custody, detectives obtained a search warrant for his cell phone where they discovered numerous photos and videos depicting child sexual abuse material.

The case was prosecuted by Pike County District Attorney Ray Tonkin. “This case is a proactive approach by my office to arrest child predators to keep our community safe from these types of predators,” he said.

NEWBURGH – San Miguel Academy of Newburgh has received a $5,000 STEM grant from the Toshiba America Foundation (TAF). These funds will support an innovative STEM project, “Testing the Waters: Engineering a Water Reuse Process”, which combines math with engineering in a real-world, project-based learning environment.

The entire 8th-grade class will participate in the project, which includes creating and testing water samples from the nearby Hudson River, exploring different types of filters, and designing systems to reuse water. Students will use math skills such as measurement, ratios, and data analysis to improve their water filtration systems, learn about water pollution, and consider how these methods could be applied to clean up polluted rivers, streams, lakes, and reservoirs.

“San Miguel Academy is grateful for Toshiba’s role in creating grants for financial resources to support innovation within our school,” said Father Mark Connell, Executive Director and Acting Principal at San Miguel Academy. “This project is particularly close to our hearts as it touches upon multiple aspects of our students’ lives.”

Toshiba America Foundation’s grants fund projects designed by individual classroom teachers. This “direct-to-teacher” approach brings immediate results. Teachers are able to change the way they teach Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects because the grant supports equipment for hands-on experiments and inquiry-based approaches to the curriculum.

Running back Graham grows into a leader for Middletown https://newyorkinquisitor.com/state/mid-hudson/running-back-graham-grows-into-a-leader-for-middletown/ https://newyorkinquisitor.com/state/mid-hudson/running-back-graham-grows-into-a-leader-for-middletown/#respond Thu, 14 Nov 2024 22:15:37 +0000 https://newyorkinquisitor.com/state/mid-hudson/running-back-graham-grows-into-a-leader-for-middletown/

Julani Graham has little time for breaks on the football field this season. Graham is Middletown’s featured running back and the team’s starting linebacker. He’s also added captain to his role.

The junior is one of Middletown’s most experienced players. Graham’s two rushing touchdowns helped defending champion Middletown to the Section 9 Class AA title his sophomore season.

“It’s been a lot to pick up,” Graham said of his leadership role. “Last year, we had a lot of leaders on the team. I just had to sit back, learn from them, and be a good example.”

“It’s different this year because now I have to speak up and I have to be the leader because everyone is watching.”

Middletown (4-6) aims for back-to-back Section 9 titles for the first time since 1993-94 when it plays top-seeded Monroe-Woodbury at 6 p.m. Friday at Dietz Stadium in Kingston. The third-seeded Middies received a bye into the final after No. 2 Newburgh Free Academy canceled its season due to code of conduct violations.

Graham has navigated Middletown through an 0-3 start and setbacks in five of its first six games.

“He has done everything we have asked during the season,” Middletown coach Tim Strenfel said. “He has grown into the young man I was hoping to see this year. He’s doing well in school, on and off the field. I’m very happy with his progress.”

Middletown’s last regular-season game was a 16-12 loss to Monroe-Woodbury on Oct. 8. Graham vows that the Middies will improve this time around.

“I need to have a better game than the last time we played them,” Graham said. “It’s going to be a different me this Friday. As a team, we have to execute better. The last time we played them, we held them to three points until the fourth quarter.”

Additional security has been dispatched to Monhagen Middle School on Tuesday morning after the district learned of an online threat made against the school on Monday night.

In a letter to parents, Enlarged City School District of Middletown Amy Creeden Superintendent Amy Creeden said “There is no evidence that this threat is credible.” However, out of an abundance of caution, additional security resources, including local law enforcement, were placed at all campuses in the district, according to Creeden.

“The threat, which police are investigating, was made on social media by an unidentified user who created a fake, well-known user name in an attempt to gain attention, and the threat has been shared rapidly by and among our young people,” Creeden wrote. “Once identified, the individual will be held accountable for their actions.”

The district is operating on a normal schedule and the investigation is ongoing.

Fire department financial secretary guilty of embezzling parade funds https://newyorkinquisitor.com/state/mid-hudson/fire-department-financial-secretary-guilty-of-embezzling-parade-funds/ https://newyorkinquisitor.com/state/mid-hudson/fire-department-financial-secretary-guilty-of-embezzling-parade-funds/#respond Fri, 01 Nov 2024 22:31:48 +0000 https://newyorkinquisitor.com/state/mid-hudson/fire-department-financial-secretary-guilty-of-embezzling-parade-funds/

GOSHEN – The former financial secretary of the Washington Heights Fire Company in the Town of Wallkill Friday pled guilty in Orange County Court to grand larceny in connection with the theft of $17,947 from the department’s parade fund.

The fire company had planned on holding a parade on September 23, 2023, that was to include 35 other departments. As a result of Simpson’s embezzlement, the parade had to be cancelled 11 days before the event.

An investigation by the State Police revealed that between August 29, 2022 and September 8, 2023, Simpson stole the funds from the fire company’s parade bank account by using a debit card to make 83 unauthorized ATM cash withdrawals.

As part of her plea  agreement, she must repay the full amount of money that she stole.

District Attorney David Hoovler called the embezzlement “reprehensible and unfair not only to the brave men and women who unselfishly serve as firefighters, but also to the community who were robbed of an opportunity to show their appreciation.”

Section 9 Football Rankings: Where does your team rank? https://newyorkinquisitor.com/state/mid-hudson/section-9-football-rankings-where-does-your-team-rank/ https://newyorkinquisitor.com/state/mid-hudson/section-9-football-rankings-where-does-your-team-rank/#respond Mon, 28 Oct 2024 12:39:15 +0000 https://newyorkinquisitor.com/state/mid-hudson/section-9-football-rankings-where-does-your-team-rank/

As we head into the playoffs, Rich Arnott checks in with his latest Section 9 football rankings.

CLASS AA/A

1. CORNWALL: Shutting out a very strong Wallkill offense while spotting 49 points on the board themselves provides enough evidence that the Class A Division Two champions have entered playoff mode. In two weeks, Cornwall will host the loser of Warwick @ Minisink in the semifinals.

  1. MINISINK: The Warriors controlled the Port Jervis rushing game which went a long way toward the 28-14 win in a big matchup to break the bottle of champagne on the new Glennette Field turf. Back to Class A business, MV certainly wants to clinch the A-1 division over Warwick to set up a grudge match with Our Lady of Lourdes in the semifinals.
  2. NEWBURGH: The Goldbacks continued their mastery over archrival Kingston to take a 62-52-5 all-time lead in a series that dates back to the inauguration of Kingston High School in 1915. NFA holds a 4-1 league record and the winner of Monroe-Woodbury @ Middletown will tie them with that same mark. Newburgh will get the top seed heading toward the Class AA playoffs if Middletown wins that game. Otherwise, M-W gets #1 and the Goldbacks would still host a semifinal as second seed.
  3. WARWICK: The Wildcats usually keep comfortable because the high-powered offense provides enough of a cushion when the defense stumbles. While remaining the only unbeaten team in Section Nine at 8-0, Warwick will enter the A-1 championship game as an underdog to Minisink. We’ll see if the Wildcat defense makes the stops.
  4. MONROE-WOODBURY: Nate Coulanges and his teammates brought M-W back to the win column at Valley Central. To further convince the local worrywarts about their recovery, they’ll have to deal with a surging Middletown team at Faller. A win means the division crown in AA along with the top postseason seed. The #1 will host a semifinal against the winner of Pine Bush @ Kingston, which earns that winner the fourth…
