BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — A rollicking back-to-school celebration took over Montague Street on Sunday, and hundreds of kids and their families from all over New York City got in on the action.
Alex the Bubble Lady created a sensation as she swept cascades of huge bubbles down the street, and kids waved their little arms and jumped to pop them. All the while, the whole crowd bopped to irresistible tunes spun by the DJ, like “I Got a Feeling” (Black Eyed Peas) and “Macho Man” (Village People).
Kids fearlessly tried gymnastics feats and enjoyed the dozens of games, arts & crafts tables, bubble shows, fitness classes and live performances.
On the literary side, Brooklyn Poets hosted a poetry pop-up, and Books Are Magic and Brooklyn Book Bodega put together a Back-to-School Book Drive.
The party was sponsored by Brooklyn Bridge Parents, Mommy Poppins and Community Offshore Wind as part of Open Streets on Montague, a project of the Montague Street BID, Brooklyn Heights Association and the city’s Department of Transportation. More Open Streets on Montague events will take place Sundays through Oct. 27.
