Prom season is almost upon us, and in an effort to an effort to alleviate the financial burdens associated with the milestone event, the Brooklyn Prom Project is gearing up for its 11th annual prom wear giveaway.
The initiative aims to ensure that over 1,000 New York City high school seniors can attend prom in style — without the worry of financial constraints.
Dawn Simon, director of the Brooklyn Prom Project, emphasized the importance of enabling every student to partake in this quintessential high school experience.
“We know that costs for prom can add up quickly and that some kids just can’t afford to attend,” Simon said in a statement. “Prom is one of those quintessential high school experiences no one should have to miss – and especially not for financial reasons.”
The Brooklyn Prom Project, a member of the Operation Prom National Network, was founded by former Yonkers student Noel D’Allacco. Today, the organization operates as a national non-profit, collaborating with elected officials, churches, businesses, and local residents to collect thousands of dresses for the giveaway event.
Operation Prom National Network is based in New York and has locations all over the country. The organization is fully staffed with volunteers.
This year’s giveaway event will be held at the Urban Assembly Institute of Math and Science for Young Women, located at 283 Adams St. in Downtown Brooklyn from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 23. Participants can expect a wide selection of prom wear to choose from, ensuring they feel confident and stylish on their special night.
To be eligible for a free prom dress, students must meet specific criteria. They must be passing all their classes, recommended by their guidance counselor, demonstrate severe financial need, and register by filling out an electronic application.
