Police released photos on Thursday of four suspects wanted for allegedly beating an advocate for Israel during a Union Square pro-Palestine demonstration on Monday.

Law enforcement sources said 54-year-old Todd Richman was attacked as he displayed an Israeli flag during the demonstration on Oct. 7, the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Israel that led to the ongoing war against Hamas in Gaza.

Video circulating on social media shows Richman — co-chair of the Democratic Majority of Israel  being mobbed and harassed as he tried to display an Israel flag in front of the protestors.

In the video, a woman donning a black hat, black sweater, red pants and red sunglasses is seen antagonizing Richman by shaking a tambourine in his face. Another protestor wearing a medical mask tries to snatch his flag as several other demonstrators yell obscenities at him in the background.

Soon after, the protestors push him, a melee ensues and the woman strikes him in the face with the tambourine.

A man wearing a white T-shirt and black jeans struck Richman in the face with a flagpole. Richman appears to push back at the protestors before he attempts to walk away from the chaos.

Even as Richman starts walking from the scene with his face bloodied from the attack, the angry, aggressive mob follows him, yelling,This guy’s attacking people!andGet him out of here!while mocking him with crude remarks.

Officers from the 13th Precinct arrived at the scene and escorted Richman to safety as they kept the rowdy protestors at bay. EMS treated his injuries at the scene.

So far, no arrests have been made, but police are hoping the public can help identify these suspects in the photos or provide information about their whereabouts:

A familiar company is opening a new quick-service grocery delivery hub in Brooklyn with technology it says could “revolutionize” food shopping.

Save A Lot, a discount grocery chain with more than 700 stores across the country — but none in New York City — is opening a new micro-fulfillment center in Kings County, promising fast and affordable grocery delivery.

The concept isn’t new in New York City. In 2021, the city was flooded with new companies promising 30-minute-or-less grocery delivery, most of which have since closed

But Save A Lot’s model is different. Its new facility is almost entirely automated with tech from robotic fulfillment company Fabric. When an order comes in through UberEats, robots grab bins full of food and hand them off to other robots on the ground to be delivered to a human packer for delivery.

save a lot facility

The system can put together a 50-item grocery order in as little as six minutes, according to Fabric, and orders could be delivered to the consumer’s door in half an hour. The company claims that facilities using Fabric automation pay higher wages and have less turnover than traditional grocery stores, and that the speed and low cost of automation means it’s faster and cheaper than shopping at a traditional grocery store.

“At Save A Lot, we’re committed to keeping prices low and making sure our customers have access to the essentials, especially as inflation continues to affect household budgets,” said Bill Mayo, chief operating officer at Save A Lot, in a statement. “Our partnership with Fabric and expansion into micro-fulfillment will streamline operations and allow us to offer accessibility to consumers wherever they are at competitive prices.”

Grocery store costs have increased roughly 25% across the country since 2020,…

The annual Power Women of the Bronx event on Thursday, Oct. 23 will honor influential trailblazers from various industries who will be recognized for their impact on business, community and leadership.

When women support women, amazing things happen.

“Bringing together an inspirational group of women with diverse backgrounds and powerful stories is what the Schneps ultimate networking events are all about,” said Elizabeth Schneps Aloni, SVP Events, Schneps Media.

Schneps Media, publishers of the Bronx Times, amnyMetro, Caribbean Life and Noticia, is proud to bring together the most extraordinary women to connect, support one another, do business and build community. This year marks 30 years of honoring Power Women across the NY area so the celebration will include special designations of past Power Women as ICONs, new Power Women will be named and women on an upward trajectory in their careers will be honored as Power Women RISING.

Gloria Sandiford, B.S., M.A., Lic. NYS Real Estate Broker, Flateau Realty, Corp. was honored at the Power Women of Brooklyn event in September and said, “…Thank you for allowing me to be a part of such an uplifting, gracious, and awesome event. I am so very appreciative of you and your team at Schneps Media for hosting such a well-planned and professionally executed event that honored women. The event gave me a much-needed break while spending quality time with my friends and family on an unforgettable night. If the goal of the event was to make us women feel special, appreciated and like a Queen for at least a day then for me, you went above and beyond the goal.”

In addition to celebrating the selected honorees, at every Power Woman event, Schneps Media raises money for a local cause through a raffle. For Power Women of the Bronx one hundred percent of the evening’s raffle proceeds will go to this special cause.

Power Women of the Bronx Honorees include:

Julissa Alvarez, MSW, MSB, Founder & CEO, Brimela Routes…

When I think of high school, I remember jam-packed hallways, many faces without names and a host of teachers who I would never know and who would never know me. Trust that this kind of anonymity did have its benefit when I wanted to sneak beneath the radar or get away with something. Perhaps, however, being in a big pond did not lend itself to the kind of meaningful relationships and personalized learning that researchers have repeatedly associated with greater success in school and life.

As has been the case for the last twenty years, I work in a small school in a big city. After starting off my career in a large suburban school, the impact of size was very apparent when I made the shift to a small independent school. Anecdotally, I realized that I quickly came to know every student and family and, therefore felt more equipped to begin to address needs and teach to the strengths of my students. If I did not know the research then, I certainly had the qualitative experience to confirm that smaller schools made it easier to teach and learn.

According to the Coalition of Essential Schools, small schools are better at knowing and understanding students. As a result of knowing their learners better, small schools assign more meaningful work and deliver more tailored instruction. This kind of personalization extends beyond the curriculum and the student, as family and community partnerships are stronger as well. It is hard to argue against the benefits of a more personalized and meaningful education.

At Columbia Teachers College, pre-service teachers learn that the more authentic and meaningful the task, the deeper the learning will be. Research from Vanderbilt University’s curriculum expert, Grant Wiggins, demonstrated that if students find assignments relevant, they will see value in it, and thus deepen their learning. Decades of research into motivation have shown time and again that when students feel connected to a teacher and the material, they…

The MTA’s new R211 subway cars have officially arrived on the Staten Island Railway (SIR), bringing the agency’s newest rolling stock to the often-overlooked 14-mile transit line on The Rock.

MTA officials took the inaugural ride on the R211S, specially designed for the SIR, out of St. George Terminal on Tuesday. The cars will run in service for a month-long pilot before more are expected to be rolled out.

The new railcars entering service will replace the R44, the oldest rolling stock in the entire MTA portfolio, which has glided on Staten Island’s tracks since 1973. New York City Transit president Demetrius Crichlow said the cars are expected to have six times better reliability than the R44.

“These beautiful new train cars are a major investment in transit on Staten Island,” said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber in a statement. “Between the train and the 56 bus routes, we take great pride in the service the team delivers to help make Staten Island a great place to live.”

The R211 has run on the A line since last March, while the “open gangway” version has run on the C since February.

When the R44 finally goes the way of the dodo, the oldest rolling stock in the system will be the R46, introduced in 1975 and still running on the A, C, N, Q, and W lines.

A Manhattan man was convicted of murder for strangling a transgender woman to death in her Glendale apartment and then tampering with physical evidence in 2010 for the second time.

Rasheen Everett, 43, of Jefferson Street in Lower Manhattan, was originally tried and found guilty in 2013. That conviction was reversed due to a judicial error of the trial judge in 2021.

His retrial openings began on Sept. 18, and closings occurred on Oct. 2. Everett was found guilty on Thursday in Queens Supreme Court of murder in the second degree, burglary, and tampering with physical evidence following a two-week jury trial.

The jury deliberated for approximately one hour before reaching the guilty verdict.

“We are determined to seek justice for the victims and their loved ones, no matter how much time passes,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said.

According to trial records, on the morning of March 27, 2010, Everett entered the apartment of the victim, Amanda Gonzalez-Andujar, located on 62nd Street in Glendale. Several minutes after he entered the apartment, the victim’s upstairs neighbors heard screams and loud banging, consistent with a struggle. Police from the 104th Precinct in Ridgewood were called to the location, but no one answered the door when the officers tried to gain entry.

Approximately eighteen hours later, just after 3 a.m., Everett was seen on video surveillance exiting the apartment by himself while carrying two bags. The bags were later discovered to contain the victim’s camera, keys, laptop, suitcase, coat, and cell phone.

Three days later, at around 4 p.m. on March 30, 2010, concerned family members entered the apartment and found…

Keith Roberts served eight years in prison after being convicted based on the testimony of an unreliable witness.

An East Flatbush man who pleaded guilty to a 1986 killing to avoid prison after a successful appeal in 1996 had his wrongful conviction overturned Thursday, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced.

Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Matthew D’Emic vacated Keith Roberts’ conviction and dismissed the indictment on Oct. 3 following a reinvestigation by the Conviction Review Unit (CRU). The CRU found that the sole eyewitness at trial was unreliable, Roberts’ rejected alibi defense was credible, and the police investigation was inadequate.

“This exoneration underscores the critical importance of our Conviction Review Unit and its mission to right the wrongs of the past,” Gonzalez said ahead of Roberts’ court appearance. “Mr. Roberts, like many others, found himself trapped by a system that failed to recognize his innocence, and nearly 20 years ago, he pleaded guilty just to stay out of prison.”

“Our reinvestigation revealed the deep flaws in the original case — unreliable testimony, overlooked evidence, and a rushed investigation. Today, we are able to restore his dignity and good name and affirm his innocence,” he continued.

Roberts, now 67, was previously convicted for the September 1986 fatal shooting of Pierre Sanon, 33, outside the Holiday Social Club in East Flatbush.

According to the only identifying witness, the shooter fled to a nearby house after the killing. Police went to the house, where Roberts lived, and interviewed him. He claimed to be at another party that night and voluntarily participated in a lineup, where the witness identified him.

Roberts was arrested, and the case was closed just over 12 hours after the homicide. At trial, the eyewitness testified, as did several witnesses supporting Roberts’ alibi. Despite this, the jury convicted Roberts of second-degree…

Bronx-based employees of a large security company remain unpaid weeks after the business closed last month without warning.

Westech Security and Investigations, which had an office on East Tremont, shuttered while owing many of its workers up to $1,000. However, the former employees are not the only ones who appear to have been duped — so too have investors and local check cashing companies, the Bronx Times has learned. Meanwhile, other security companies throughout the city are stepping in to help the former employees who were swindled.

In the weeks since Bronx Times broke the story about the closure, Westech owner/CEO William Vassell has come under fire and is facing questions from many former employees. Meanwhile, investors in the company and local check cashing companies—who had the firm on a blacklist—are also seeking answers as to how they will recoup lost funds.

Former security guards, who rallied on Sept. 10 to demand their pay outside the closed office, said they have not received an explanation or apology from their former employer. While Vassell told the Bronx Times he has talked to “anyone who asked,” most have heard nothing.

“I feel very hurt about what me and my coworkers went through,” said former security guard Davina Roache in text messages to the Bronx Times on Oct. 2. “I can’t believe they got away with this and haven’t even reach[ed] out to the workers.”

Roache said she applied for unemployment, but it has been difficult and slow, and she cannot afford to pay her bills.

“I am so hurt! I can’t believe we are still subject to free labor in America,” said Roache.

Breach of contract

Several former Westech employees have filed complaints with the state Department of Labor, which confirmed it is gathering information.

In a call with the Bronx Times on Oct. 3, Vassell said he has provided payroll information to the federal Department of Labor and that he believes it’s possible for employees to receive the…

Police arrested Thursday the brute who punched an 81-year-old woman last month as she walked her dog on the Upper West Side, authorities said.

According to police sources, 37-year-old Hansel Esparragoza was cuffed in Staten Island on Oct. 3 after police were called to a convenience store following a commotion. Sources familiar with the incident report Esparragoza was accused of shoplifting and when cops arrived, they realized he was wanted for a shocking September assault and took him into custody.

Esparragoza is accused of a horrific unprovoked attack on a senior on Sept. 13 as she walked her pooch along 66th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. Police reported that Esparragoza approached the octogenarian from behind and took a swinging blow that walloped the 81-year-old so hard she fell to the ground and lost consciousness.

“I have amnesia, I don’t even remember what had happened,” the victim told The New York Post. “Except that I have the face and body [bruises] to feel that.”

She was rushed to Bellevue Hospital suffering bruising and a concussion, law enforcement said.

Esparragoza was escorted out of the 20th Precinct in cuffs by detectives on Thursday afternoon where he refused to answer reporters’ questions regarding why he allegedly committed the unprovoked assault. This isn’t the first time he has been in trouble with the law, however. In March of 2023, Esparragoza was arrested in the St. George Ferry Terminal for harassing an 11-year-old child by allegedly grabbing and kissing her hand. The interaction of the mother confronting Esparragoza went viral on TikTok. He was charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child.

In the Upper West Side sucker punch, Esparragoza was charged with assault in the second degree.
