A man is fighting for his life after being struck by an uptown 5 train in Union Square on Tuesday morning, authorities said.
Police said the incident happened at about 9:27 a.m. on March 19, when the 5 train pulled into the stop, bringing busy morning train service at the transit hub to a brief halt.
According to law enforcement sources, a man of unknown age was walking by the edge of the platform when he fell onto the roadbed โ and into the oncoming trainโs path.
EMS and transit police scrambled to the manโs aid. Paramedics rushed the wounded man to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition.
It is currently unclear whether the man simply slipped off the platform or had some kind of medical emergency. Police do not expect criminality at this point.
Both local and express trans along the 4,5, and 6 lines were delayed for several hours as police and MTA employees worked at the scene.
