An NYPD officer in Queens was shot Monday afternoon in an apparent firefight and is undergoing emergency surgery, sources familiar with the situation said.

Although information is still continuing to emerge, sources with immediate knowledge of the incident report that the officer engaged in a gunfight with a suspect on Beach 19th Street and Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway, within the 101st Precinctโ€™s confines, at about 5:52 p.m. on March 25.

According to WABC-TV, the officer is a member of Patrol Borough Queens South, and was conducting a traffic stop involving the suspect before the shots rang out.

โ€œI saw two people shot, the cop was screaming, โ€˜I am hit, I am hit, send help!โ€™โ€ said one witness, Deion Peters, who spoke with amNewYork Metro at the scene.

Both the gunman and the officer were apparently struck by gunfire. While the suspectโ€™s condition is not immediately known, sources say the officer suffered a bullet wound to the abdomen.ย 

Police and EMS swiftly set up a transportation route to get the wounded officer to Jamaica Hospital, where he is now being treated. The officerโ€™s condition is not yet known.

Numerous officers arrived at Jamaica Hospital waiting to hear more about the wounded officer. Mayor Eric Adams also rushed to the medical center to visit the cop.
