The number of reported rapes and felony assaults across northern Queens spiked during the 28-day period from June 3-30, compared to the same period last year, according to the latest crime stats released by the NYPD.
The number of rapes reported in northern Queens went up 121.4% year-over-year, from 14 cases during the 28-day period in 2023 to 31 in 2024.
The most significant increases during that 28-day time frame were experienced within the confines of the 114th and 115th Precincts. In the 114th Precinct, which covers Astoria, Long Island City, Woodside and Jackson Heights, reported cases rose from one last year to six this year. In the 115th Precinct, which covers East Elmhurst, North Corona and Jackson Heights, there was an increase from two last year to seven this year.
Felony assaults in northern Queens increased 46.9% year-over-year for the 28-day period, from 239 reported cases in 2023 to 351 in 2024.
The biggest jump in felony assaults was seen within the confines of the 115th Precinct. Reported cases over the 28-day period more than doubled in the precinct, from 32 last year to 69 this year.
There was, however, a significant drop in the number of grand larcenies reported across the borough for the 28-day period—the only major crime category where there was a major decline compared to last year.
In northern Queens, grand larcenies went down 9.2%, from 597 reported cases in 2023 to 542 in 2024. The 110th Precinct, which covers Corona and Elmhurst, had the steepest drop in cases. Reported grand larcenies there plummeted from 148 last year to 108 this year.
Southern Queens experienced a 22.3% decrease in grand larcenies over the 28-day period, from 264 cases in 2023 to 205 in 2024. The 106th Precinct, which covers Howard Beach, Lindenwood and Ozone Park, had the most significant decline in grand larcenies. Reported cases there fell from 46 last year to 29 this year.
