On Dec. 18, 2023, actor Jonathan Majors, known for his roles in movies like “Creed III” and “Devotion,” was charged with assault and harassment against his ex-girlfriend, actress Grace Jabarri. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for Feb. 6 and he faces up to one year in jail.
Majors was arrested the morning of March 25, 2023 after Jabarri accused him of assaulting her in a taxi. The attack stemmed from Jabbari seeing text messages that seemed to be from another woman, including “oh, how I wish to be kissing you.” Jabarri tried to grab the phone from Majors, who retaliated by twisting Jabarri’s arm behind her back and hitting her in the face. Jabarri was left with a cut behind her ear and a fractured finger. Majors ran out of the taxi and Jabarri attempted to follow, but Majors “grabbed her, picked her up, and threw her back inside,” according to prosecutors.
Later in June 2023, Majors alleged that he had been assaulted by Jabarri as well as filed a cross-complaint. After the NYPD determined that there was enough evidence that supported Major’s claim, Jabarri surrendered herself to the NYPD Oct. 25. However, no case was pursued against her.
On Dec. 13, evidence from the case was released to the public that showed what happened in the taxi Mar. 25, photos of Jabarri’s injured ear, and an audio recording of Majors telling Jabarri to be more like “Coretta Scott King,” wife of minister and activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
King’s daughter, Bernice King, addressed Major’s comments in a post Jan. 9, stating that her mother “wasn’t a prop. She was a peace advocate before she met my father and was instrumental in him speaking out against the Vietnam War. Please understand … My mama was a force.”
Despite the backlash, Majors reinforced the “Coretta Scott King” obsession in an interview with Good Morning America on Monday, comparing his current girlfriend, actress Meagan Good, to the civil rights leader.
