STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.— A grand jury has indicted two men in the shooting death of a Staten Island deli owner in what police say started as a robbery attempt.
Adam Hussein, 23, of Markham Drive in Bensalem, Penn., was arraigned Oct. 11 in state Supreme Court, St. George on charges that include first-degree and second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and criminal possession of a loaded firearm in connection with the incident.
A second individual, Yaseen Bassuny, 21, of Klondike Avenue in New Springville, was charged in the case with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and first-degree hindering prosecution. He was arraigned the same day as his co-defendant in front of Justice Lisa Grey.
Police who first responded July 8 to Manor Deli and Convenience at 444 Manor Rd. in Castleton Corners found co-owner Bassam Khateeb, a 35-year-old husband and father, dead of a gunshot wound. The incident unfolded just before 8 p.m.
Both defendants have been remanded without bail on Rikers Island.
A third, male suspect eyed in the case has not been apprehended, an NYPD spokesperson said Tuesday.
The NYPD and the U.S. Marshals were among authorities who took Hussein into custody Sept. 28 at the Commons at Fallsington Apartments, Morrisville, Pa., according to Patch.com.
A criminal complaint filed in the case alleges Hussein caused the death of Khateeb by shooting the 35-year-old shopkeeper in the body.
The two defendants are due back in court Nov. 15.
