6 exceptional Staten Islanders selected as 2024 Women of Achievement

The Women of Achievement judges were perplexed.

For the uninitiated, Women of Achievement is an annual program founded by the Advance in 1962, and now co-sponsored by Richmond University Medical Center, that salutes Staten Island women who go far beyond the call of duty in their work to make Staten Island a better place.

The judges who select the honorees were befuddled because so many worthy women were nominated. Scores of them.

These are women who regularly go above and beyond, and as much as the judges would have liked to salute each one at a gala luncheon May 9, they knew it was not realistic.

The six judges, Women of Achievement themselves, worked hard to finally decide on six honorees.

Today, we break tradition. We wonโ€™t wait till spring to announce the chosen six in a special print section and on SILive.com.

Instead, today we announce the 2024 Class of Staten Island Advance Women of Achievement.

And they are . . .

Beverly Anderson. Her involvement from the Greenbelt, to Project Hospitality, to principal of McKee High School, to working with students with disabilities, to advising The Bridge Preparatory School, to being a critical team member of the New World Prep charter school, earns her the title Woman of Achievement. โ€œHer advocacy for families and students has set an example for all of us,โ€ a nominator said.

Barbara Dโ€™Amora. A founding member of The Grace Foundation and co-founder of Crimson Rise, Barbara has worked tirelessly as an advocate for those impacted by autism and their families. She introduced a communication tool to Staten Island that has allowed non-verbal children find a voice. Barbaraโ€™s son, Nicholas, was non-verbal. He died of a seizure at age 25. โ€œIn her grief, she is focusing on Nickโ€™s legacy, his hopes, his dreams and his mission to continue to help the autism community,โ€ said a nominator.
