STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The corner of Castleton Avenue and Port Richmond Avenue has a new look.
Built around 1930, what was once Willyโs Knight, a dress shop and a furniture store, looks now to become a market. There was a fire here in 2011, but with a shiny new eye-catching red and black outer decor, the building being called The Port Market Corp.
I have many memories of this building as my mother was a seamstress at MelodyAnnโs Dress Shop in the late 60s-70s. I remember many gowns and isles of puffy dresses.
Itโs good to see a new business here.

There are brick buildings on both corners; a clock is mounted on the corner of the building at left, a bank. A fire station is visible a few buildings down on the right. The approach to the Bayonne Bridge can be seen in the distance. The building on the right is 210 Richmond Ave. March 21, 1939. (From the collection of Historic Richmond Town)
