August, we’re feeling you. Let’s share the love with an adoptable pet. Aug: 19-20

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — With everyone at work and heading to school, a question arises: How long can you leave your dog, cat, or other furry loved one home alone?

If you are a dog lover, you know that even after going to the store for only 30 minutes, your dog will likely act like they haven’t seen you in years. The effect of being home alone is something to think about.

Puppies may not have lived in a home long enough to understand that “this is home,” but they need to pee more often, and going long periods without urination can lead to other issues. Adult dogs understand that this is home and may not have as much anxiety — they know you’ll be back, but a maximum of six hours is best for your furry loved one.

Leaving dogs at home for long periods can lead to excessive barking, gnawing on furniture, howling, and anxious behavior.

On the other hand, cats are more self-sufficient when left with a clean litter box, food, and freshwater. Unlike dogs, they might not destroy things when dealing with separation anxiety. If you leave them with the necessities, they can be left alone for up to 24 hours.

If leaving your pet longer than the recommended time, it’s a good idea to have a dog walker or friend come and check on them to make sure they have what they need. And if they have a fur friend to keep them company, two heads are better than one.
