Chris Mortensen, an ESPN reporter who covered the NFL, died Sunday at the age of 72, ESPN is reporting.
Joining ESPN in 1991, Mortensen spent nearly three decades as a regular contributor to the network’s NFL shows and “SportsCenter,” the report said.
Mortensen who received the Pro Football Writers of America’s Dick McCAnn award in 2016, took time away from his work with ESPN when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 throat cancer in Jan. 2016, the report said.
Mortensen also wrote for The Sporting News, contributed to Sport magazine and consulted on CBS Sports’ “NFL Today,” the report said.
Mortensen is survived by his wife, Micki, and son, Alex.
