Bronx DA says NYC firefighter stole credit cards off dead man, racked up $1K in purchases

A New York City firefighter has been arrested and charged after allegedly stealing a dead man’s credit card – and going on a shopping spree after responding to 911 call in Manhattan.

Sylus McKenzie, 33, of the Bronx, is facing a slew of charges, including grand larceny, attempted identity theft, criminal impersonation and official misconduct, according to a to Bronx District Attorney’s Office press release.

McKenzie had been working for the FDNY for four years. On Jan. 11, 2021, he responded to a 911 call for an unresponsive man at 231 E. 50th St. in Manhattan. That’s where authorities allege McKenzie took the deceased man’s credit card, according to Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark.

The next morning McKenzie went to a number of stores and used the victim’s card, racking up around $1,120 in charges.

Authorities said the firefighter went to Target, a Food Bazaar Supermarket and a Sunoco gas station. He attempted to buy Apple AirPods using the stolen credit card, authorities said.

“These alleged actions are reprehensible, even more so because he is a member of the city’s Bravest and violated the public trust,’’ Clark said.

McKenzie’s next court appearance will be Sept. 7.
