Charles LaGanga, a dedicated community leader, dies. He was 86.

Charles LaGanga of Todt Hill, a lifelong Staten Islander whose generosity and commitment to community strengthened dozens of organizations and charities in his hometown, died Thursday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.

He celebrated his 86th birthday on July 9.

โ€œCharlie had such a big heart,โ€ said Dr. Mohammad Khalid, longtime friend and fellow leader of the Iron Hills Civic Association. โ€œHe was always there for Staten Island and will be dearly missed.โ€

Mr. LaGanga and Dr. Khalid were partners on projects ranging from a fight to preserve Chapin Woods and Last Chance Pond, to their work with the Staten Island Friends for Hospice Care and the John J. Bruno Childrenโ€™s Luncheon to benefit Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Benedicta School in West Brighton.

โ€œCharlie was a one-of-a-kind, gregarious, sometimes larger-than-life individual,โ€ said Borough President Vito J. Fossella. โ€œHe always seemed to be dedicated to doing good for his friends and the community of Staten Island. Mary Pat and I offer his family and friends our deepest sympathies.โ€
