CUNY to allow students to transfer credits within their major between colleges: What you need to know

STATEN ISLAND, NY — At the 2023 State of the University address last month, CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez announced that by the end of 2024, students will be able to transfer within their major between the CUNY colleges, saving them up to $1,220 by the time they graduate.

In February 2023, the CUNY board of trustees passed a resolution to implement a policy enabling smooth transfer of credits for students who transfer between an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program within the same major by no later than Dec. 31, 2024.

With transfers up nearly 7% since 2020, CUNY is working toward a more streamlined process, said Rodríguez.

Undergraduate student and journalism major Valerie Conklin earned her associate’s degree in communications at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC); however after transferring to Baruch College for the fall 2023 semester, she noticed that some of her credits did not transfer.

“I took a semester of American sign language at BMCC and that has mysteriously disappeared,” she said.

Conklin’s major falls under the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences at Baruch, which requires students to take two semesters of a foreign language. Although she’s not worried about recovering the credits at the moment, Conklin said she will address it with Baruch’s transfer office next semester.

“Let’s say the language credits ended up being a problem for me,” said Conklin. “If I have to pay for an extra semester, that is money and time I could spend moving forward in my career. That is the whole reason I am going to CUNY.”

Conklin joined CUNY by applying to BMCC’s Second Chance Program while simultaneously working full time at a cafe and attending school part time.

“It was so hard to focus on my classes, and it’s really a very different learning experience,” she said of juggling work and school. “So yeah, a couple thousand dollars and change absolutely makes a difference when you’re trying to plan your future.”
