CYO Staten Island Cheerleading Championships are Saturday with a brand-new twist

Staten Island’s March Madness is almost here and, no, we’re not talking about the NCAA Basketball Tournament either.

The CYO Staten Island Cheerleading Championships, instead, are set to take place on Saturday over the course of two different sessions at the College of Staten Island’s Sports and Recreation Center in Willowbrook.

CYO County Coordinator Mike Neely released the times for the morning (9 a.m.) and afternoon (12:45 a.m.) sessions and 32 teams from Staten Island will be competing in what amounts to be 11 different divisions, including two in the brand new junior varsity division.

“We’re trying to align (cheerleading) more with our other programs,’’ explained Neely of he decision to add JV to the cheerleading ranks. “It’s definitely for the betterment of all schools in that it will give more girls a chance to participate.

“We’re excited about this new division.’’

Overall, the 11 divisions include: Varsity Large; Varsity Small; JV Large; JV Small; Debs Large; Debs Small; Biddy Large; Biddy Small; Itty Large; Itty Small and Mini.

The Varsity (8th grade-under), JV (6th grade-under) and Debs Divisions (4th grade-under) will include scoring while the Biddy, Itty and Mini divisions, all of which include cheerleaders from 2nd grade-under, will be exhibitions.

In addition, Annunciation, a team from Westchester, and the Staten Island Spirit Sky, a Special Needs team, will also perform.

And remember, just one week later on March 23rd, the CYO Archdiocesan Cheerleading Championships will take place at CSI as well.

The Advance/SILive.com, of course, will be on hand with a reporter and two photographers. It should be noted that in order to read the story and see the action-packed photos, cheer fans will need to become subscribers. You won’t be disappointed!
