DA McMahon renews college sexual assault initiative with local colleges

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island District Attorney Michael McMahon welcomed College of Staten Island President Timothy Lynch and Dr. Ruta Shah-Gordon, vice president of enrollment and campus life at Wagner College, to his office Wednesday for the official contract re-signing of the Staten Island Comprehensive College Sexual Assault Initiative.

The agreement ensures that counseling, medical resources, discussion of legal options, and a support person to assist in navigating the criminal justice system will be made available to any survivor of sexual assault who reports the incident.

Even if the survivor makes the decision to not file a report, the option of meeting with an RCDA Victim Advocate for counseling and assistance will be available, regardless.

“A partnership between my office and our beloved borough’s higher education institutions, this agreement ensures that our college students have the counseling, medical resources, and investigate services they need should they ever become a victim of sexual violence, either on or off campus, as well as access to the many prevention tools and resources our office can provide,’’ McMahon said.

“Sexual violence has no place in our borough, let alone in our classrooms, campuses and colleges, and I commend our partners from Wagner College and the College of Staten Island for reaffirming our partnership and for their unwavering support and commitment to keeping our students safe in the terrible event that they need our help,” McMahon said.
