Keep politics out of sports, they say — unless it’s a Utica Comets game.
On Wednesday, the mascot for the New Jersey Devils’ American Hockey League affiliate posed with a “Trump 2024 Take America Back” flag alongside a “Hometown Hero” fan at Adirondack Bank Center, according to social media posts, which included a video of the incident.
During the segment at a stoppage with 13:10 left in the first period, Sergeant Jerry Borden was honored for his military service with a personalized jersey and greeted by an ovation from fans. With the camera still capturing the moment, Borden put down the jersey, waved to the fans and unfurled the flag in front of his face. Maudie, the mascot, appeared to pump his fist and held part of the flag before the camera shot was redirected at the ice.
The Utica Comets declined to comment when reached by NJ Advance Media on Wednesday night.
Former President Donald Trump is running in the Republican primary and is currently the favorite to be on the ticket against President Joe Biden on the Democratic side. According to the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, Trump has been faced with 91 criminal charges as of December 2023, including an election interference case that he is trying to delay.
As for Utica, it lost 5-1 to the Rochester Americans, but many fans on social media appeared more interested in what went on in the first period:
