STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A New Springville intersection was the scene of a terrifying car crash Tuesday night that left two vehicles mangled and witnesses wondering whether anyone could have survived.
At approximately 9:25 p.m. officers responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision involving a Mitsubishi SUV and a Nissan SUV at the intersection of Richmond Avenue and Yukon Avenue, according to an NYPD spokesperson.
Police say the 18-year-old female driver of the silver Mitsubishi claimed that she had the green arrow and was turning left onto Yukon Avenue when she was stuck by the maroon Nissan SUV driven by a 27-year-old male.
According to police, the driver of Nissan SUV said he was traveling northbound on Richmond Avenue when the Mitsubishi struck him.
The female driver and two passengers were transported in stable condition to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze, while the male driver was transferred in stable condition to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton, police said.
Several people could be seen pulled over and standing in an adjacent parking lot watching as members of the FDNY worked to survey the two crumpled cars.
“I never saw an accident like that right before my eyes,” a witness at the scene told the Advance/SILive.com. “I thought for sure someone was dead.”
There have been no arrests and an investigation remains ongoing, the NYPD spokesperson said.
