STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Late-night rain leading into Friday morning may trigger isolated flash flooding, the National Weather Service warned.
There is an 80% chance of precipitation Thursday night and a potential for a thunderstorm to develop, according to the agency’s forecast. Rain totals could reach between a quarter-inch and a half-inch.
“As a warm front moves into the area this afternoon the chances for showers and thunderstorms begin to increase, with the greatest activity being late tonight into early Friday morning,” wrote the National Weather Service’s New York office on X/Twitter.
On Friday, rain is forecast to persist alongside a possible thunderstorm, mainly before 2 p.m. There is a chance additional showers and thunderstorms occur through the afternoon into the early evening, adding another quarter-inch to a half-inch of rain.
The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center has placed Staten Island within an area at a marginal risk of excessive rainfall on Friday, making isolated flash flooding a possibility, especially for areas that can experience rapid runoff from heavy rain.
