Ex-Jets GM: Giants could be interested in benched nine-time Pro Bowl QB

The Broncos are benching quarterback Russell Wilson for the final two games of the season, reported Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network on Wednesday.

Wilson signed a five-year, $245 million contract with Denver in 2022. The contract includes a $37 million injury guarantee for 2025 that becomes fully guaranteed in March. According to Rapaport, by sitting the nine-time Pro Bowler, the Broncos could be indicating that they intend to move him in 2024 by keeping him healthy for the rest of the season.

One team that could be interested in Wilson is the Giants, according to former Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum. New York owes Daniel Jones $36 million guaranteed in 2024. Should they trade for the former Super Bowl champion, theyโ€™d be paying their quarterbacks a total of at least $75 million.

This season, Wilson has the seventh-best quarterback rating (98.0) in the NFL โ€” better than Lamar Jackson (97.2), Josh Allen (93.7) and Patrick Mahomes (91.0). Heโ€™s started all 15 games for Denver, completing 297 of 447 passes (66.4 completion percentage) with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Itโ€™s a huge improvement from his first season in Denver (2022) when he threw for 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and completed a career-low 60.5% of his passes en route to a 4-11 record.

Giants quarterbacks โ€” Daniel Jones, Tyrod Taylor (free agent after this season) and Tommy DeVito โ€” currently have an 81.9 quarterback rating. Combined, theyโ€™ve completed 286 of 443 passes (64.6%) with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. With Wilson, theyโ€™d double passing TDs and cut interceptions thrown nearly in half.

It seems far-fetched that the Giants would be willing to commit so much at quarterback, with the likelier moves drafting a QB or improving the weapons around…
