Ex-Mets top prospect hits the IL after kicking water cooler

The Seattle Mariners might be without Jarred Kelenic, who was once seen as a star prospect in the Mets system, for the rest of the season.

It turns out, the 24-year-old broke his foot after taking out his frustrations on a water cooler in a 3-6 loss to the Twins on Wednesday. This drops the Mariners, who have lost two straight games and five of their last 10, 10 games back in the AL West and 5 1/2 games behind in the Wild Card race.

This wasnโ€™t reliever Tommy Kahnle going berserk on a fan in the Yankees dugout, alรก the โ€œOffice Spaceโ€ copy machine beatdown. It was a Kelenic kicking a water cooler after striking out against closer Jhoan Duran in the ninth inning – a bout of frustration gone really bad.

โ€œHe had X-rays last night and a scan done this morning,โ€ manager Scot Servais said via Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times. โ€œHeโ€™s going to be out with a broken bone. Nobody feels worse about it than Jarred does. I think itโ€™s a learning lesson for him and for all players.โ€

It was an unfortunate incident that he deeply regrets.

Talking to reporters in the Mariners dugout before Thursdayโ€™s game, Kelenic could barely speak through the tears.

โ€œI let the emotions get the best of me there,โ€ he said wiping away tears. โ€œI feel terrible. Especially for the guys. I just, I let the emotions get the best of me and I let them down.โ€

After making adjustments to his swing in the offseason, the 24-year-old is slashing .252/.320/.439 with 11 home runs and a career-best 12 stolen bases.

Kelenic was drafted by the Mets No. 6 overall in 2018. He was shipped to Seattle after his first summer in Queens as part of the mega-trade in December 2018 that brought closer Edwin Diaz and infielder Robinson Cano to New York, getting shipped to Seattle alongside Jay Bruce, Gerson Bautista, Justin Dunn and Anthony Swarzak.
