The Lexington Counter Clocks scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning to erase a one-run deficit and beat the Staten Island FerryHawks, 9-4, Wednesday night at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park.
The Hawks took a 4-3 lead into the eighth inning, but a tough call on a 3-2 count shifted the momentum and the lead to the Counter Clocks.
With one out, the bases loaded and the FerryHawks clinging to a 4-3 lead, recent College of Staten Island graduate John Esposito was summoned from the FerryHawk bullpen by manager Homer Bush to work out of the jam.
He struck out the first batter he faced, but ran the count full to the next batter. Esposito fired a fastball that that the hometown faithful thought caught the strike zone, but was called a ball tying the game and opening the floodgates for a six-run uprising.
The Counter Clocks got on the board first with a sacrifice fly and homer that propelled them to a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat.
However, the FerryHawks wasted no time as Angel Aguilar drove in Ricardo Cespedes in the bottom half of the inning to cut it to 2-1. Cespedes went 4-4 with a walk in his return to the lineup after playing in a tournament in Latin America.
Lexington added a run in the fifth to extend the lead to 3-1, but that would be short-lived.
In the bottom half of the fifth, Tottenville High School baseball product Kevin Krause hit a three-run no doubt home run over the left field fence to give Staten Island a 4-3 advantage. Krause finished the game 2 for 4 and raised his batting average to .280.
