Gone so soon!
Versatile leadoff man Shane Matheny is moving on from FerryHawk land. The team announced that the 27-year-old Washington native has signed with the Los Angeles Angels organization.
Itโs a bittersweet sendoff for the FerryHawks, who are happy to send another player to an MLB organization, but in the meantime lose one of their top players. Matheny, who can play both the infield and outfield, started two games for Staten Island this season, hitting leadoff in both and going 2-for-8 (.250) with one stolen base.
The FerryHawks are currenty 2-3 through five games of the season.
Matheny was a 23rd round pick of the San Francisco Giants in the 2017 draft out of Washington State and spent six Minor League campaigns with the franchise before joining the FerryHawks this season.
He hit .229 with 48 home runs in 531 career Minor League games.
โWeโre excited for him and excited that Major League Baseball recognizes the talent on the roster and in Staten Island,โ said FerryHawks team president/co-owner Eric Shuffler. โWe look forward to a huge weekend for our home opener on May 3 and first fireworks on May 4, where the fans can see Major League talent like former World Series MVP Pablo Sandoval.โ
