STTAEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Girls Who Grieve (GWG) is a six-week program designed for women aged 21-35 who have experienced significant personal loss.
Founded by Alana Herman, Jessica Pisano, and Brittany Conigatti, the program offers a holistic approach to healing and growth, combining movement, meditation, journaling, and therapist-led discussions in a supportive environment.
The group came to life as an idea rooted in the loss of Herman’s father. Following his passing in 2021, she realized how isolating grief can be, especially in the transformative phase of life in your 20s.
As a result of her father’s death, Herman now suffers from anxiety and panic disorder. When she went searching for resources to share the harsh realities of losing a loved one prematurely, she felt misunderstood.
Driven by a longing for a supportive community to navigate the profound challenges of living with life after loss, Herman forged a path and established her own community.
“Those coping with the loss of a loved one are constantly reminded of their absence,” Herman said. “Having a supportive network is so important, but it can be difficult to find.”
It was during her 200-hour training to become a yoga teacher that Herman met Conigatti, who also lost her father, back in 2019.
Not being mental health professionals, Herman and Conigatti wanted to find the perfect partner to lead their group discussions, and that is where Pisano comes in. She is a social work clinician, educator, and also yoga instructor.
The members of the GWG explain that mental health is a vital aspect of our well-being and how it is deeply intertwined with our social connections and our communities.
