Michael Chiarello, a celebrity chef and a former star of several food and cooking network shows, has died, according to several media reports.
Chiarello was 61 years old. The Wrap reports he died after being treated for the past week for an acute allergic reaction that led to anaphylactic shock, according to a statement from his Gruppo Chiarello restaurant group. He was known for several appearances on network food shows, including โTop Chef,โ โTop Chef Masters, and โNext Iron Chef,โ and hosted shows on Food Network, PBS, and the Cooking Channel, according to The Wrap.
His program, โEasy Entertaining with Michael Chiarello,โ on the Food Network earned him an Emmy in 2005.
He died surrounded by family and friends at Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa, Calif., according to the statement, as reported by The Wrap.
โWe deeply mourn the loss of our beloved patriarch Michael,โ his family said in a statement, The Wrap reports. โHis culinary brilliance, boundless creativity, and unwavering commitment to family were at the core of his being. He brought people together through the joy of shared meals, fostering lasting memories around the table.
He was named Chef of the Year by Food & Wine Magazine in 1985, and was recognized by the James Beard Foundation. His restaurant, Tra Vigne, opened to critical acclaim in the Napa Valley in 1987, according to The Wrap. He also wrote many cookbooks. He owned several California restaurants, including Bottega, Coqueta (San Francisco and Napa Valley), and Ottimo.
He came from a southern Italian family in Californiaโs Central Valley โ beginning his cooking journey in his familyโs kitchen, The Wrap reports. He was a graduate of the esteemed Culinary Institute of America in New York, according to Business Wire.
