Former Heisman winner and league MVP Cam Newton became the latest to join a long list of those doubting Miami Dolphins’ quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Dallas Cowboys’ signal-caller, Dak Prescott.
Both quarterbacks came off disappointing 2022 seasons and have led their teams to winning records in 2023, each ranking in the top five for passing yards and touchdowns. Prescott and Tagovailoa have rightfully earned spots in the MVP conversation, but they haven’t convinced everyone that they’re worth the hype.
Newton took to his podcast “4th & 1 with Cam Newton” to discuss the MVP competition and quarterback landscape. “Brock Purdy, Tua Tagovailoa, Jared Goff, and really, Dak Prescott, these are game managers, they’re not difference makers,” Newton said.
The former Carolina Panthers’ quarterback doubled down, saying that a game manager’s responsibility is not to go out and win the game, it’s merely to not be the reason that the team lost. “If we’re going to really call a spade a spade, there’s a difference between difference managers of the game and difference makers of the game.”
Prescott got the worst of the commentary. The quarterback has led the Cowboys to a 10-3 record while throwing for a remarkable 3,505 yards, 28 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Prescott is the current front-runner for MVP, with +150 odds on DraftKings Sportsbook.
“Dak’s responsibilities for this year is not going out and throwing for 400 yards, 300+ yards. Has he been doing it? Yes, but that’s not needed for us to win.” The former quarterback continued, “I don’t give a damn what you do, you don’t have to score every time, you just don’t have to throw a pick every time either.”
